Rebuilt alternator will not fit

My new (rebuilt) alternator will not fit. Hopefully there is a easy fix.

Harpo,

What kind of car is this for?

I just had the alternator out of my 1975. There is a spacer that sits between the alt and the fan housing.

911 65-74 (using 22MM Spacer)
911 75-83 (using 11MM Spacer)

the OD of the alternator appears to be larger than the ID of the housing. Although my car is a 74 my engine is a 3.0. The alternator is a 90 amp and the fan and housing are from a 3.2L. A bit of a Hodge podge here.

My new alternator came with a stock of shims on the alternator shaft that are currently held in place by the alt shaft key, there is no spacer between the alt housing and the fan housing.

Thanks

David

My shroud p/n is 930.106.102.4R. I cant find the p/n on the fan but I purchased them as an assembly, installed on the alt. I disassembled and sent the fan & shroud to tru 6 to be refinished.

So I have two issues here;

1) why wont the components that came apart go back together?
2) can I forward date my fan from a 3.0L to a 3.2L fan? I thought the larger alt 90 vs 75 would be beneficial.

According to JohnnyH the following wires need to be replaced (upgraded)
1. Red wire from alternator to starter solenoid.
2. Brown alternator ground wire to engine case.

Thanks

David

Was your housing painted during the rebuild? They are normally a tight fit.

These two threads suggest that I can upgrade my alternator

Yes, they were tight and some finesse was involved to remove. I guess I have some sanding of the alternator OD and the fan housing ID

Thank you

I filed the key and the slot and then used the threads to pull it together
