Alternator pulley not flush with bottom pulley

So your alternator fits all housings? A bearing broke today so i might add a retrofit alternator to my CDI order

Just replaced the housing on my 86. It was cracked. In any case I bought a magnesium housing from Germany and they sell different spacers to fit behind the alternator for different alternators. The 65 amp one is a different size than a 95 amp one. You may have a mix and match. I really had a hard time fitting my housing over the notch at the base, but I think I got it right, it all lines up. The pulley spacers have nothing to do with it, they are only for tightening the belt.
Can not wait to light up the old housing! My son in law made a magnesium powered small boat that fed water to the magnesium fire to power the boat, but I digress. I was afraid to buy the host's aluminum housing because I did not think it would be as strong as the magnesium one, it is probably good.

Pulled it all apart today, since a bearing is starting to make noise. It is a 50amp alt and the measurements for the housing is as shown in the photos.

Have to make the choise of either going original and change the housing to the correct one, refurbing the alternator and clean up the fan ... Or leave the housing as is, change alternator and clean up fan 🤔

Alternative is as said above - do a spacer that fits behind the alt and move it forward.

Also I think the fan needs a new center 🙄

If the bottom of the alternator is not properly seated against the mount, it will cause cracks to form in short order. Check the numbers on the alt mount to make certain it is the correct one for the car. The original may have been damaged and replaced with whatever was available. I believe the answer to the problem will be a replacement alternator and/or housing!

I just had the alternator out of my 1975. There is a spacer that sits between the alt and the fan housing. I didn’t think anything of it at the time, and didn’t take any pictures of it. It looks to be about the right size, maybe 1/2 inch.

911 65-74 (using 22MM Spacer)
911 75-83 (using 11MM Spacer)

The picture shows it behind the fan housing, but I think it goes between the alt and fan housing. That will leave the housing in the same place, but moves the alt rearward 11mm.

Thanks for all the helpfull input! yesterday the bearing in the alternator broke too, and one of the screws - so I think Im going for a new alternator, which might be a retrofit now that I have it all pulled apart.

I'm very sure my alternator belt is on a similar angle to the OP, it just misses the housing on the bottom. Is this really a problem? I've been running strong for over 4 years plus the previous 15 years from the previous owner.

Hi Puddy! - I think my car has been running like this for some years, but I did find 3 used belts in the car - It will wear the belts more. I think the angle is a bit more harsh on the bearing in the alternator too.

look how long those bolts are. can definitely put a spacer in there.
