87 911 Windshield antenna routing
Hey guys,
When installing a new windshield how is the antenna from the windshield routed to the amplifier under the Cowell? I never remember seeing an antenna wire connected to the windshield from the dash. It looks like someone cut a slit from what you call the dash blanket and pulled the wire through it to connect the windshield antenna... Does the new windshield gasket have a hole in it that’s made for the windshield antenna to go through for a clean install? This is for an 87 911 Cabrio, thanks! ![]() ![]() Last edited by Vino; 08-26-2020 at 09:54 PM.. |

On my model 85 the windscreen has a cable in the lower part, passenger side which ends up exiting the rubber below the dash and through a hole to the front right side where the antenna amp lives. Nothing can be seen from inside the car.

Excuse the pictures and thank you for the clarification on the antenna routing. You are correct, this is on the passenger side. I have a feeling the installer didn’t think about it got everything in and decided to cut a small hole to fit the cable... This is the second piece of glass they have installed in one month, these are becoming expensive mistakes. Does anyone know If the windshield gasket already has a hole in it or does that need to be cut to fit the antenna wire through? |

No the gasket does not have a preinstalled hole for the antenna lead. You need to poke a hole carefully through the gasket on the lower passenger side. Do you have your old gasket for reference. It helps to know where to poke. The various gasket flanges get confusing, at least for me.

Vino, the windshield has a flat wire that hugs the rubber gasket and just drops in the hole on the right side. When you place the gasket around the windshield, lay the antennae wire flat against the windshield and tape it to the windshield. Put the seal on and the trim strip and tape to hold them in place. Be careful when laying the windshield into place. Easiest to have a helper place the antennae connector thru the hole and making sure the wire is flat. It goes over the seal and then under it thru the hole. AND be careful stringing it at the spot.
Don't cut the seal, no need to. ![]() ![]()

They can use it for reference on the hole location with the new gasket. I think the last gasket was compromised anyways as there is a big chunk of rubber on the bottom just leaning against the dash. Hopefully third times the charm. |

I’m actually kind of liking your idea and if I recall this may be something new they’re doing with the glass production for our cars to eliminate the need of making a hole on the lower part of the gasket? I did find one thread about someone mentioning this on pelican on how the thin gold foil goes up between the gasket and windshield and then hugs the seal going down to eliminate The need to cut a hole in the gasket and possibly prevent future leaks? I would assume the windshield will need to be pulled anyways to get the antenna down the correct hole. |
