Great sounds. But I still remember the IMSA GTO Mazdas when they ran in the 80's, the noise of the wide open rotary would rattle every bone in your body.

For sheer pain, though, I've never heard anything louder than F1 cars in the normally-aspirated 3L timeframe (late '90s-early 2000s).

I went to the US Grand Prix in 2000, the first year they raced at Indy. We got there during Friday practice and the sound of those cars rounding the banked turn(1 in the oval configuration) and accelerating down the straight is something I’ll never forget. I still get goose bumps thinking about it.

Long live the turbo 911!
Surprised the RS Spyder isn't on that list. That has got to be the loudest car at the Rennsport gatherings. I also agree on the rotary Mazdas being loud. Anytime I go to vintage races, the Mazdas tend to be the loudest. By a significant and painful margin.

I wonder if the stewards at Rinnsport kept any measurements of those cars when they were racing last summer. It would be interesting to be able to compare all the models.

I saw the F1 GP in Long Beach, it was almost deserted, my g/f and I walked the entire track. The sound was visceral. While on the back straight just as the cars hit top gear they went past our spot on the fence. I could feel the vibration in my diaphragm, it felt like a vibrator under my rib cage. I wanted to move but my g/f wanted to stay there “for awhile”. You will never guess what she told me after the race....
Same thing at the Reno Air Races, when Rare Bear hit the nitrous, it sounded like carpet being torn. That P-3 prop sucked up an amazing amount of HP. Top Fuel in the 70s was similar, great on tv, but being there brought it to a whole different level. Always wanted to see the Unlimited Hydros with Merlins.

Thunder boats, oh yea. What a shame they went to turban motors. Nothing like six unlimiteds side by side at the start.
Since we are off Porsches, I once was near turn 10 at Sonoma during a NASCAR race. Beyond loud. My brain was vibrating. Then again. If you haven't been to a top fuel NHRA race. You have no idea what loud is. Although that video was very cool, it is just not the same as on the track.

I saw this video a few days ago. Agreed that it is quite cool. I was surprised that the turbo motor was one of the loudest.
Re: the Mazda rotaries, I think it was Dorsey Schroeder who said something about them making your ears bleed, they are so loud. But the NHRA top fuel cars are definitely the loudest things ever. I grew up not far from Englishtown Raceway and went to the Summernationals a few times. Those things vibrated the grandstands as they went past. And perhaps more impressive, when I couldn't be there in person, I could clearly hear them on racedays from my house 10 miles away! |
