Lol, must have been that $30k paint job guy doing the work.

And personally, I find these Safari builds so lame. Will be nice when this fad is over.

I like Matt Farah but goes to show you can charge whatever you want for work on these cars and some sucker will pay it.

I'm at ~86k right now and the motor runs great but I REALLY hope when my time comes for a top end it doesn't run 20k.

I thought the quote was $18k?

I agree it seems steep - I have heard anything from $5k up for a ‘top end’. What should it cost?

Take off the cost of new cams and associated hardware as well as the cost for new P&C's (which I hope to God is in that $18-20k shoot from the hip estimate) and it brings it down to earth a wee little bit.

$18,000 to $20,000 is a total rip off. It was sad to see Marco quote that price.

Sorry but that is just insane. This is maybe a 30 hour job + machine work and parts. I and any shop discounts labor a good bit when a job is over 15-20 hours.

I didn't think it could get worse than that quote until I read the comments section.

That’s an expensive area. Farrah is doing some high dollar upgrading too. This all adds up.

Ha, that’s what I was thinking - and the paint “started” at $30k and the pan replacement was $8k, “not a penny less” if I recall correctly!

There are some great mechanics that will perform a top end for much less. I plan on making a visit to John Walker when I have my old SC 3.0 rebuilt. I’m sure you could have the engine removed and sent to a proper mechanic and have the work done for much less than $20k.

911 safari builds? I never understood that trend.

It's not about sucker.
It's about rock and a hard place, and being exploited.

Bald guy just got quoted $20k and his engine is in pieces.
What would you advice the bald owner should do?

But how is this remedied?

Everyone says you can't get a quote until everything is apart. And only then they know what it needs.
Captive buyer over a barrel. At that point, he can say $20k for a top end. He knows your only recourse is to tell him to reassemble, pay him $5k in labor, and drive away and start over.
Just like when your car breaks down out of state and is towed to a local station. They've got you. Either pay $1000 for the $200 repair, or pay $500 for a tow, and still need the repair.
