Targa window felt and general service?

My car came to me with the power window harness cut out. Finally sourced a new harness (Thanks Tom @ Rennshop) and am preparing to operate the windows for the first time in a decade.

In the bottom of the door I found remnants of a felt seal or guide -

Picture looking forward inside door -

And rearward inside door -

My first guess is that the rear window channel should have a felt guide that's missing. But according to this thread the rear channel is just a metal U shape with no felt -
Porsche Targa door window felt channel - which?

Any insight as to what the felt pieces were? Anything I should lube/service before operating the windows?

Parts diagram says part 3 "Window guide" Qty 2 which contradicts the thread mentioned above

There are vertical felts for the channels & horizonal ones with those steel buttons fastened to the door against the window. Might be inside. The rubber ones are outside.
Unfortunately, I'm going on memory. but I definitely remember removing what was left of mine just like yours pictured. I just haven't gotten the reconstruction of my 73.5 Targa to that point yet.
There is a drawing #804-05 if you check a Porsche parts catalog.
Think this is what you are looking for.

Looks like remains of part # 901-531-935-20-M260 - Door Glass Felt Brush with Clips.

Clips on the upper, interior edge of the door / window channel - presses against the window as it's raised & lowered.

The bits in your first picture are from the felt from the top of the door edge. I have personally confirmed you do NOT need to purchase the targa specific felt. The coupe felt can easily be modified by cutting with proper shears and relocating the steel button to the targa location.

I'll do some digging around on Pelican as I believe I posted this info somewhere.

BTW, if I recall correctly, the coupe felt mod saves you over $100!

Went back through my notes and confirmed my solution for the fuzzy seal against the glass-the parts you show in your first picture.

I ordered SIC-531-935-20 from our host at approx $35 each for a left and right side fuzzy seal. Using painters tape for reference, I trimmed the length of the fuzzy seal and transferred steel button position to the new fuzzy seal. Truly that simple and saved $200!!! The targa/cabriolet specific fuzzy seal is only available from Porsche at $135 a side.

Lube that rear channel guide with some Napa Sil-glyde silicone and apply a little to the gears while you have the door panel off.

Thanks for all the help!

I understand that the felt should go on the inner top edge. Looking at my door though, I just don't see where...

I have rubber wipers on both the inner and outer top edges of the door. Do I remove the inner wiper and the felt is under it?

I literally just finished working on my doors and windows today. Both the inner and outer rubber have felt on them. You should just go ahead and replace them both. The pic in your original pic is on the outer side, below the rubber connected to the outer aluminum trim piece.

Since the little connector piece at the top of the window that seals the top corner of the window and the top corner of the triangle window was broken I decided to replace that as well. Wow, what an ordeal. You have to remove the weatherstripping, the triangle glass, drill out the rivets, then replace the rivets and all the rubber. Take a look at this thread - it helped me.

I have it all back together now, windows adjusted, triangles windows raised to fit properly, windows leveled, etc. You can adjust where the top weatherstripping on the Targa top sits with four screws.

My best advice is to gather your sources - the Bentley, "Sealing of 911," "Porsche Service School Targa Roof Repairs," and "Porsche 911 Workshop Manual" (I can send you a copy of it don't have one of them) - read them all, label everything as you take it apart, and be ready to spend some time. As others have said, Targa top and window adjustments are a black art.

Monday mine goes to get new door speakers and an amp under the seat before everything goes back together.

Good luck!

The pieces I'm talking about are labeled as 6, 7, 10, and 11. 7 is the one that is in your first picture.

The door felt with the steel buttons is located under the black metal trim on the outside of the door. Easily pops up starting at the back edge of the door. Carefully remove back to front and go slowly as you approach the front as the trim narrows and can easily be bent. I used a plastic putty knife and quick turns so as to pop out the trim rivets.

Once that trim is removed, the fuzzy seal with steel buttons location becomes obvious. And note it actually attaches to the door on the outside of the window, NOT the inside.

Great info! I'll start gathering parts now that I have a better idea what's involved.

Toddetch, I may take up your offer on some of those manuals. I think I have the Targa sealing manual, will check on the others.

Thanks again!
Matt

I PM'd the following to Solamar as requested but I figure it's a good idea to post here as well to help others in the future.

No need to remove the window but roll it down for sure. That said, i believe I used the window as a backer for install of the fuzzy seal. Using a stiff but broad putty knife, I levered the fuzzy seal steel buttons into place as there is not enough room to put your fingers/hands in for install but too much room if the window is all the way down-at least in my application.

Once exposed in your car, the above should become more clear. And again, the seal installs on the door, outside of the window. Keep in mind, the required trim removal allows for you to access the exterior window squeegee. If yours is short/shrunk or otherwise need of replacement, this is the time to do so. I did both pass and driver side squeegee and fuzzy seal at the same time. Relatively cheap "while you are in there", especially since you are saving $200 for using the coupe fuzzy seal.

One more thing, using sharp tin snips, I marked the cut of the seal with a marker over blue tape. The tape will minimize the fuzzy fiber loss from the metal backer of the seal. Measure three times, cut with strength and speed.

AND one more thing, if you change the squeegee, you'll most likely need to trim to length. Note the trailing edge of the squeegee has an angle to it so as to meet the rear window channel L-shaped trim top.

Clear as mud??? Hope it helps.
