Do you think that my struts are cooked

Hi guys,

I'm rebulding my front axel unit.

I was wondering if my struts are good enougth to continue a little bit or not?

There is a little gap which I can fell with my nail?

Thanks a lot .

Have a nice day.

Street car? I would say get a Tap/Die, find the right size die (thread pitch by matching to the bolt that goes on those threads), chase the threads to clean them up and toyota re find. I believe there is usually a gap below the threads on struts. I just has mine out yesterday (wiper seal nut came loose, not good), but did not specifically check this.

If the gap is right by your nail, there should not be a gap or ridge there. That can happen if there was some malfunction with the bearing and the bearing race spun on the spindle, or perhaps someone used a chisel to remove a bearing race at some point. Take a micrometer to the spindle and see if it is out of round there. Ridges in spindles can be stress risers and cause the spindle to fail at that spot - not what you want!

If that's right where one edge of the inner race sits I'd be suspicious that its moving for some reason like the bearing wasn't tight and peened in the metal. Just for knowing, is it all the way around or just in a certain area ? For street use I'd guess it would not likely be a problem (as long as its not a crack ) if the bearing can still be tightened correctly but for strenuous use, not as much.
An opportunity to do something new/fun with the front struts like lowering, new shocks, coil overs, on and on.

It's on both sides but not all the way around.

By the way, it's a street car configuration with Elephant & Racing rubber bushing, bilstein turbo shock absorber, new master cylinder.

Looks like the inner race from the outside wheel bearing has spun on the stub axle. You probably won't be able to get all of the play out of the wheel bearing as it can tilt in the groove. For me they would be scrap. Or you might be able to find a engineering company that can weld them up and turn them down to the right size.

That is about where ours failed - but track car for 10 years and large front wheels/tires - looks like a wear item - also 40 year old parts . . . IIWM replace with new parts . . .

Regards,

If you cannot tighten to no play then its done. They aren't the most expensive part to replace if you can DIY. Gotta take some stuff apart which honestly aint't that hard once you get after it. Go ahead and let the forum know you need to borrow a ball joint tool. I got one to use for the cost of shipping.

Mine had a similar sized ridge and same issue, bearing tightened according to the book and still excess play. Yes, it's time to replace with new ones.

And really, think about it. 30 years +/- ain't bad for any automotive part ! Mine are still original at 32 years old. Buddy of mine just had to do this because his mechanic could no longer get the fronts tight enough. First time replacement for him also.

ok..there are most likely toasted...the play you have is way too much..It is possible you or the person before ,drove too long without an adjustment?..again, just the Q.do you have the correct wheel bearing replacements?

Do you have a part number for this? I think I have the same problem and I'm doing brake work anyway.

Htnaks guys for all your input.

@Proporsche, you are completely right to question my method... I'm simply a curious amateur who makes certainly lots of mistakes.

To give you a more accurate vision of my work; I'm rebuilding my front axel unit... and when it done I will do the back.

Here is some pictures .
