I like the Sweepco 101 Moly grease sold by our host, but any hi-quality axle/wheel bearing grease should be better than what went in that unit 50 years ago. Did you remove the rack & scrub everything on the inside? What is it anyway?

I also use the 101 moly from Swepco, seems to be working well for me.

The slope is not slippery; in fact it is entirely frictionless.

No, i did not removed the to clean the inside. My plan was to pumped in the grease to flushed out the old grease through the slot (under the blue tape) .. you can see the zerk fitting in placed, next to it is the original bolt. Smadsen, did you actually open up the rack to clean the inside? May be i should do that. By the way, it's a steering rack for a 68

Thanks

In my experience (which is limited) if the grease is old and dried out it may be stuck to the innards of the rack such that it won't be dislodged by new grease pushing thru. Since it's out of the car it should be easy to disassemble and clean with solvent and a stiff brush. Then lube all the moving parts before reassembly, then repack thru the zerk. I think the zerk is more for annual service. Unfortunately the steering rack seems to go decades between service. If you don't know what's inside, now's the time to do it right.

My car is an '82. Looks like the rack design has changed over the years.

This thread recommends a molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) grease.

I think I will undo the housing, clean it up and repacked with grease. Should be easy.

Thanks to all
