Tell me about this oil cooler

Car came with it. I assumed it was a factory part until I saw the hole hacked in the front valance.


W. Washer bottle relocated, so is the brake fluid overflow bottle.
What do I have?

Do you have any better pictures? Hard to tell what I’m looking at. The last one looks like the AC condenser and protective cover from a later car.

If you have an SC the oil cooler would be a trombone shaped tube in the front right wheel well.

Looking at the front valance and his signature I doubt that’s an SC

Isn't that the blower for the front condenser? Its part of the A/C unit. The PO may have cut the hole to allow for more air to enter blower thinking more air would blow over condenser.

Sorry if I appear I know nothing about the early 911's, it's because I don't... And very few in my area to ask.

The AC condensor is attached to the underside of the hood/bonnet.

That’s an auxiliary AC condenser with the blower in the front trumkblowingdown through it. The oil cooler is under the passenger’s front fender in front of the wheel.

Porsche Air Conditioning Frequently Asked Questions page is good as well with additional links to explain the AC equipment and history. The early AC systems were dealer installed.

Also, about that oil cooler in front of the passenger side front wheel - I'm pretty sure that in 1973 it was an option, and a T may not have come with one from the factory. So you may not have that on your car. Although with AC it is more likely you do. Should be the trombone style (looped tubing).

If that fan is non-operational, the A/C system, condenser side of the circuit is not protected as designed. Over pressure can occur

A Fact. Mine was a real hack job.

The A/C in my '72 was factory installed, confirmed by CoA. Not hacked, all the holes are nice, factory quality.

My COA confirms a factory AC also but stuff like SAE bolts, USA hoses, butchered holes for hoses and the front tow hook hacked off and almost perforated the front pan.

That's odd. My car did not have a front tow hook at all, and I've gathered that was normal for early cars with factory A/C. Much of what you describe doesn't sound factory, or at all what I've seen in mine so far. My install is definitely tidy, with perfectly round stamped holes, and is very professional looking.
