wiper motor issue

hello all, first time writing in with a question. was driving to porsche parade and had an issue with my wiper motor. 1988 cab 80,000 miles. put wipers on and they moved about an inch before quitting. changed fuse at jay peak and it blew again. now that i'm back home took out plenum to see if relay was bad. disconnected it. replaced fuse .wipers moved a little and fuse blew. i feel there is still power going to wipers bypassing the relay. any ideas?? i was going to the stalk next but figured i'd post here for some help.thank you... jim

Jim... never know what's been done to electrical systems (in past) that might cause some strange behavior. (Have you owned car since day 1?) I would try to trace wires to see if there's anything odd going on.

PS... welcome to forum.

PSS... Did you give your thread 5 Stars?...a bit more content is needed for that!

wiper motor issue

thanks for the input Karl. no i haven't had the car since new i'm the third owner. i knew nothing about the stars and why i would see them on some posts. after looking at the wiring diagram in bentley,i assumed the issue would be with the stem. replaced it earlier today and i still have the same problem. i did find a ground wire under dash that was bear and was optimistic that was the problem causing the fuse to blow. i have searched the prior posts on this forum for help. time to enjoy the weekend and persevere during the week for the answer. you are correct about who did what to the wires earlier,as i found several behind the plenum having me guess whats this all about.i'll get to the bottom of it this coming week.

Bought my '80 in '92 and am still finding strange wiring. Long ago I had a smolder under dash that was caused by crappy wiring---and so my note to you in that regard. You'll find it.

wiper motor issue solved

just a follow up to my post several days ago. 1988 cab 3rd owner to refresh those looking at this post. went to jay peak fuse kept blowing. wiper motor and relay were ok. i started looking for grounding issue somewhere but due to the fact i am moving i have been unable to get to the car. went back to wiring diagram today in bentley manual. i noticed fuse 7 serviced the wipers as well as rear wiper and window defrost. i have a cab, so the 3 wires on the fuse block was where i figured the issue was. seperated the three wires, since only one would supply the motor. the other two were there but not being utilized for a cab. thats were the problem was found. one of the dead wires was grounding out casing the fuse to blow. happiness once again. hope this will help anyone in the same situation..

While I am in there....
So I had a problem with my windshield wiper fuse blowing about 5 months ago on my 84 911 Targa. Spring has arrived so I made my second attempt to get to the motor by unhooking and moving the blower motor assembly. Once I had the wiper motor exposed, I started to read up on what to do next, and found this post. I thought I may as well unhook the extra wire attached to my #7 fuse (rear defroster?) and voila, no blown fuse. But then I hooked the defroster wire and wiper wires AND still no blown fuse. So not quite sure why my wiper fuse "healed."

So any suggestions while I have the motor exposed? Can I do anything to ensure it is all lubed up in case it was frozen or too resistant? I would hate to put everything back together since that blower removal was a pain and then have to do it again in a few weeks....
