AC Icing Up on '86 Carrera
While driving from Austin to Houston yesterday afternoon I had the AC on - it ran solid for over an hour but eventually stopped blowing cold air. I popped the hood when I got home and saw a line iced up. Any idea what would cause this? Ambient temperature was about 80 and the humidity was low.

It probably stopped blowing cold air because the evaporator iced up as well. Most likely due to a faulty thermostat or the thermostat probe becoming dislodged from the evaporator matrix.
You didn't notice the compressor was being run continuously and not cycling? You could try running it at 3/4 of max cold setting rather than fully cold to see if that prevents the evaporator icing. |

A/c
![]() ^^^^^ Try these control settings. ![]() ^^^^^ Also, because it is almost impossible to determine the compressor on/off cycle while the car is driven, I added an LED across the compressor circuit as an indicator. Please provide additional data such as to when the issue sstarted, refrigerant type, any A/C modifications ect... Is the evaporator drain plugged up? Your local A/C shop should have a look & hang some diagnostic high/low side gauges. Also, an open thermostat wire will not allow the compressor to engage, which is not your problem. Send a pm to Kuehl-He is the man!!!! Best, Gerry
