Oh Damn!!!!!
I need some advice guys.... Battery was dead in my teener. Haven't driven it for a couple months...so........I was trying to push start it this weekend. After many unsuccessful attempts, the last time I popped out the clutch, it didn't turn over the motor.........JUST A TICKING SOUND!!!!! Is it possible that I stripped the splines on one rear hub.....or worse.........blew out first gear?????? Let me know what you guys think. I still havent bought a battery....or looked at the car after that. IM SCARED!

I had a problem today, i didn't have second gear but had third and no forth....I find out my spline on my coupler to the Tranny mount was loose enough for first gear but would just slide back and forth...I tighend up the bolts...and wow...all my gears...
This is coupler under the carpet behind the seat in the middle...under the plate....don't know if that helps....but may be a simple solution. |

I'm sure you've tried another gear, mikey?
I have had good luck push-starting my car in reverse. Regardless, get the battery charged and see how your tranny is.

FWIW, it's always easier to push start a car in 2nd or 3rd, better reduction/ turns motor easier.

the mainshaft often breaks off under the little 1st gear, when doing burnouts, and other somewhat abusive stuff. hopefully that's not the problem. does reverse still work?

You know, for a while my only car was a 77 MGB. I tell you what, you have never truly lived until you have had a car you had to puch start every morning to get to work. I just started backing up my driveway with a little slope, that way i could just push my car really fast and then jump over the door (convertible) and pop it. ...Good times.
Anyway, what kind of "ticking" was it? I had a car once with an electronic ignition box that would tick for a sec as i started it. I would get a battery and try it out.

For the next time.....( maybe this will help others, too)...
Notice that when the engine is driving the car...1st gear allows the engine to spin fast and the car "slow"....normal gear-ratio mechanical advantage... So...when you're push starting...think of the forces occurring in the "opposite" direction...therefore you'd like third or fourth gear...something that woudn't put so much strain back into the box. Car's wheels will turn easier relative to the needs of turning the engine to life. Pretty much what speedr said.... Hope it's not the overhanging first gear set... if it's a 901 box.. ![]() --Wil Ferch

Sounds like what John W said. I doubt the clutch would fail in this manner (although I have had at least one strange clutch failure in my 914).

i just said that because the clutch comming apart sounds way cheaper than the mainshaft. just hoping for the best.
