Positioning of sump plate on 83 sc

I've read, several times, that the drain plug on 83 sc should be at 9 o'clock. (Drivers side)
I'm in the process of changing mine since it's at 6 o'clock and I noticed the drain plug lines up with the curved tube coming through the screen.
If I rotate the drain plug 90* it obviously will no longer line up with the hole in the screen and the curved pipe.
Is that going to be a problem?
Thx
Hugh

I believe the sucking up of oil will be higher than the magnetic force downward to pull metal out of the oil.
I have never put the magnet in alignment with the scavenge pickup

So then it's just a coincidence that my magnetic plug is set up the way it is?
Would it have left the factory that way?
It certainly seems odd as all that I've read indicates it was wrong.
Maybe set up that way by a previous mechanic?
Thx

On my 80sc the sump plate can be mounted in the wrong orientation which won't allow proper flow at higher speeds but my plate does not have a drain plug I have to remove it completely during oil changes.

When you say " on the roght" do you mean passengers side , or do you mean the other right ie drivers side?
It seems I have read to place drain plug on drivers side but then I don't see where there would be a difference.

Thx

most of the drain plugs you will see are ,facing the rear of the car on left ,that is drivers side..not HRD 911..PEt even shows it in the 6 o'clock..so let me correct my above writings ...

Ivan,

That PET image may be of the old style sump screen. With the new style, the drain plug has to go on the drivers side, 90-degrees to the case seam.

I'm pretty sure a 1983 came with the new screen, seen here: 3.2 SS engine oil pump

+1. People who have used the Venturi type sump screen on their motors are familiar with the drain plug orientation. To avoid confusion using left or right side, I recommend to people to orient the drain plug towards 1-2-3 cylinders. This will both apply to LHD and RHD 911 cars.

I'll try to post pics of what I have.
The sump plate, with drain plug, is separate from the domed screen.
The domed screen has an opening for the oil pick up and that was directly over the drain plug.
I can see where having the pick up directly over the drain plug might cause some restrictions so moving the drain plug under cylinders 1 2 3 would make sense.

Sorry, tried posting pics from my phone but no luck
I will go ahead and rotate my sump plate 90* and I'm sure there will be no harm done.
Cheers.

I just had a look at my 1982 engine to let you know which way around mine is and the sump plate doesn't have a drain plug at all.

Also I thought '83 engines didn't even have the sump plate and looked like the bottom of a 3.2 engine.

Now might be a good time to remove the sump plate and see if the filter/mesh on the pump pickup needs cleaning. this way you can be 100% sure you have it on the right way when it goes back on.

This conversation usually revolves around incorrect orientation of the "bowler"-style anti-cavitation screen that nestles into the sump. That screen's large molded hole must be oriented to the driver side where the pump pickup can be positioned through it for oil pickup. The bolt itself can probably be oriented anywhere.

As background, by 1983 the anti-cavitation "bowler" screen setup was in all of the SCs. The issue for earlier cars (like my '78) was the movement during hard turns of oil away from the driver side-oriented oil pump pickup, causing temporary scavenge loss and lack of oil to the engine.

1983 SC s were manufactured with the 1984 3.2 Carrera cases towards the end of the Model Year production, so early 1983 SC s did have the sump plate.

Hi Mark i know it is on the left always has been ..unless some mechanics put the drain plug somewhere else...the pet i post is from 1983...so Porsche did not bother to correct it..Yes 1983 and 1/2 had the 911 Carrera engine case. These are considered the best of the best 911 SC models;-)

where can you find one of these screens now? I'm doing a top end on my 79SC and my screen does not look like that.

Pictures really help. The opening is for the pump pickup. If you line up the opening with the pump pickup, the dent lines up with where the plug has to go.

Since I've now decided how I'm going to proceed with the re-installation of the plate my question is do we use some sort of sealant on the gaskets during reassembly?
Thx
