oil plug thread size ?

'86 3.2l, I am trying to find the thread size of this plug, on the engine case. I've searched and can't seem to find it. I am measuring .774" thread dia. which converts to 19.65 mm. doesn't seem right.

I'll measure it tomorrow at the shop, but was hoping to get something ordered tonight.

Thanks,

~Chris

I am stumped. The oil tank drain plug seems to be 22mm x 1.5. It uses a 19mm wrench.

but I checked the engine drain plug and, while the pitch is 1.5, the major measures 19.74-19.76mm. I had two others check/confirm. We are calling it 19.75mm. The plug uses a 15mm wrench.

weird.

ok, I just measured the thread OD for the oil tank drain plug, it is just over 21.75mm in diameter.
I can only assume that this is a 22mm x 1.5 thread (the pitch was definitely 1.5, same as the engine case plug).

Could the engine oil plug be a 20mm x 1.5 thread !?!? Another little bit of info: The engine case oil plug bottoms in the oil tank, no thread interference or hint of engagement. The oil plug from the tank will not even begin to engage the threads of the drain on the engine case.

I am trying to size a correct banjo bolt & eye fitting to rig up a oil return system for my turbo!

thanks,

~Chris

want to bumped this up before I leave work.

I'll run by the hardware store on the way home and see if they have any 20mm x 1.5 hardware to test fit in the drain hole.

nobody can confirm that maybe the engine oil drain plug is a 20mm instead of 22mm?

Thanks,

~Chris

From the handy dandy Porsche factory spec book (in this case it's the Carrera book for years '84 to '87)

Oil tank is M22, engine sump is M20

I just purchased this part from our host for 3.2 engine rebuild and it sure seems like the thread pitch is wrong. Hangs up after 1/4 turn and will not turn by hand at all. Case is like new reconditioned from Ollies so there is no crud in the case threads.
Part #: 911-107-176-03-M260

Any thoughts?

Bill

That part number is the drain plug for the oil tank which is M20x1.5 size. You want part number 944-107-197-01 for the engine case drain plug, which is M22x1.5 size
