MSD 6A woes '66

installed incident to a new engine startup. engine would not fire and switching to a coil / condenser setup worked.

MSD 6A 6200 purchased in the classifieds here as "...new never mounted..." OK no wires cut, no smell of smoke... hooked up per the instructions online. (Blaster coil)

one question: page 5 of the instructions (wire functions)
*****************************
Note: Never connect the alternator
*****************************

should this read 'Never connect *TO* the alternator' ? (anyway, I didn't)

https://www.jegs.com/InstallationInstructions/100/121/121-6200.pdf

I've reviewed the wiring a few times and everything looks OK.
I know the coil works because when my brother and I were verifying TDC he touched something that knocked him on his a** (not good for a guy w/ A-fib)
the unit does make a ticking sound, but I don't think any of the smoke leaked out

input appreciated.
TIA

Greetings.......how do you have the unit wired up specifically? Are you triggering the MSD with a points type trigger....via the white wire or a VR type trigger, using the purple & green wires? Is the MSD set up for a 6 cylinder engine...I.E. the correct wire is cut? Are you sure that you have the orange wire to the coil positive and black to negative? Have you done the spark check to verify if the wiring/MSD is good?

PS: I use the streetfire units on many of my systems and they have a red LED light that comes on with the switched 12V and then flashes when the coil fires....I don't remember if the 6A has that feature, but if it does and there is no red light...you likely have no switched 12V to the unit.....

regards,
al

hello Al and thanks for chiming in.
I am triggering the MSD with a distributor, 0 231 184 004 specifically, with the white wire.
model 6200 does not require modifications to run on a 4 or 6 cylinder even fired engine. (ie; there are no wires to cut)
I've checked the orange and black wires @ the coil, but will do so again.
now I see how to check for spark on page 10 of the instruction manual. I'll do some trouble shooting in the morning.
the 6A / 6200 does not have the LED your unit has. I did verify 12V at the input to the MSD.
thanks again
I'll see what transpires tomorrow.

after following the 'spark test' procedure I've determined that the issue is with the coil. a new 'can type' Blaster is on the way. thanks again.
