997 ims & rms
My 2006 997 is showing some slight oil seepage from the RMS. I change oil every 2000 miles to inspect the oil filter for metal shavings from IMS. I have never found any shavings to date. Also, I am at 34,000 miles on the car. If the RMS is leaking, can this cause me issues with the IMS, or are they two separate animals? Repair shop is suggesting replacing both seals with an upgrade at a cost of $2,600. All thoughts or experiences are welcomed. Thanks Guys!!

Robert -- despite its name (Porsche 911 technical forum), this forum is frequented by (and primarily covers) air-cooled 911s and the IMS/RMS issues experiences by water-cooled 911s are well outside the knowledge/expertise of many on this forum.
Pelican has a water-cooled forum where you might get more clarification -- understand Rennlist has a very active water called forum too. |

To answer your question, they're different. The RMS keeps oil from leaving the engine from the crankshaft / block interface.
The IMS bearing is not serviceable on 06+ without a complete motor teardown. Some '05s have the old, replaceable style bearing, the switch happened sometime mid year. Your '06 bearing has very low failure rate. Drive happy.

It's a widely held opinion on the RL list that the 2006 997 does not suffer IMS bearing issues to the point of having to deal with it. The 2005 model year can, but not 2006.
As for the RMS, if you are in far enough to see the RMS, then yes change it. But it should not cost $2600 and should be done along with another job, like a clutch job for example. To pull the gear box just to replace the rear main seal is normally not done unless you are pissing oil everywhere.

Thanks for the help guys. I religiously inspect the oil filter every 2000 miles and find nothing. The servicing shop says they saw slight seepage at the rms. So are you saying if the rms begins leaking badly, which it isn’t, that still doesn’t mean the IMS will need replacing. Don’t mind paying $2600 if it saves me a replacement engine. But don’t want to spend 2600 unnecessarily either. Thanks again guys!!

Kinda the rub. You can't see the RMS without pulling the trans off. What you can see is oil at the spot where the engine and trans meet, and guess why from there.
If it's just a weep, honestly don't worry about it (noted coming from an air cooled guy, oil leak is life.) Change it at the next clutch job. If it's leaving a baseball sized spot every night, then you have a problem. Sounds like they're trying to prey on your concern to sell unnecessary work to me. Just one random guy on the internet's opinion, though. Good luck.
