A new finish for my exhaust?
I searched out a rattle and found a broken bracket on my bursch muffler. So I pulled the muffler to take to work and get welded up tomorrow. While it's out I noticed how ugly it's getting. I searched the archives and found pics and info on "Hot-Jet" coatings. Wow, they looked great.
![]() So I'm thinking about having my muffler and cat bypass coated. Can ne1 ("anyone" Wayne) give me an idea what this might cost? Also, is there a company in the Seattle area that could do this or similar process? Thanks guys |

I may try this tip from one of the 356 guys re: exhaust painting.
He says Rustoleum zinc/gray available in spray cans at Home Depot will maintain color under racing temperatures. |

I'll vouch for Jet-Hot. I used it in the past on a couple of SCCA race cars and I had a Bursch system done last summer. I sold that system before installing it and the buyer is very happy with the finish (do a search for a thread about it, or maybe Vu will pop up here). The cost to do the Bursch muffler and a Bursch cat pipe was $285, including shipping both ways. Not the cheapest way to go but certainly durable, and it also reduces radiated heat to the rest of the engine.

I've had a couple things done by Jet Hot.
I don't expect perfection because i'm not really that particular. I simply like things to stay clean. So I don't think i'm being unreasonable when I say the person doing the QC inspection should at least make sure that all of the blast media (glass beads) is removed from the part. Both times i've had my parts coated by Jet Hot, my parts have returned with the glass beads stuck in different places. Some of the beads were inside the headers, some were in plain view on the exterior of the part. Also, I would expect them to make sure the mating surfaces of the parts to be smoothest after coating (like they were when I sent them the parts). Many of the flange mating surfaces had a noticeable uneven coating which I had to grind down to avoid a potential exhaust leak. That's just unacceptable IMO. I certainly should not have to prep. the coating before I install my parts. Not to mention grinding the coating pretty much defeats the purpose of having it coated in the first place!!! They also dinged my muffler. If it was just a little dent? Big deal. But no. They had to drop the muffler on the slip joint pipe which resulted in me spending a good hour straightening the pipe edge so that the inlet pipe could be inserted cleanly. If you couldn't already tell, i'm not too impressed with Jet Hot's quality. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice................ ![]()

Look under "powder coating" in your Seattle Yellow Pages and call a few companies. Some of them may also do "ceramic/metallic" high-temp coating, which is what "Jet-Hot" is. I had mine done locally for about $125.
The other alternative is to have the muffler "aluminized", which is a cheaper alternative, involving hot metal-spraying. It is a very durable coating and costs half of what the Jet-Hot type does, but it doesn't come in colors (white only). TT
