Used Oil Cooler Question

Hi guys, I recently picked up a used Carrera oil cooler for my 83 SC from a pretty reputable parts company. It looks surprisingly clean (no dings, dents, or even flaking paint), and supposedly came off a "running" car.

It definitely hasn't been cleaned (nor was it sold as such), and I'm having difficulty finding a radiator shop that can clean and pressure test. I'm fine hooking it up and finding out if it leaks, but I am concerned with any contaminants that might be in it from the engine it came off of.

I'm sure I can flush it in my driveway, but in the event I missed something, does anyone know the circulation route of the oil from the front fender cooler? Would any contaminants be caught by the filter before hitting the engine?

Thanks for your help!

We strongly recommend having it ultrasonic cleaned and pressure tested. Check with a local race shop or aircraft mechanic for someone in your area.

I'll definitely defer to what Tony said below!

Sig,

All the oil flowing through the auxiliary cooler and subsequently enter the oil tank has to pass through the oil filter. Any debris or dirt in the oil is screened or filtered as the flowing oil enters the oil reservoir. That is the main purpose of the oil filter. It is always safer to use an engine oil cooler with known history (tested and cleaned).

Tony

When I rebuilt my engine I had the oil cooler cleaned and tested by pacific oil cooler. They did a nice job on it.

Whatever way you go this is a great addition...I have the factory unit on my '83 SC Euro and run in the Phoenix area summers….rarely hits 210 but only on a 110 degree day...

91 today and ran hard after an oil change...hit 110 mph....oil temp 190...it generally runs 100 degrees hotter than the ambient temp.

I switched the fan to a toggle switch under the dash by the ash tray to control when and how I want it to run.

You will have to move your trumpet horns forward is you keep them.

Nice change....one of the best for an SC.

Sending a cooler to a place like pacific oil cooler is cheap. Even if it should be fine, why risk a $10-20k engine on saving a $150-200 service.

This. Get it pressure tested and professionally cleaned. Engines are just too expensive to gamble with.

+ Pacific oil cooler

I have seen many happy users of Pacific, on this thread and on the Ferrarichat forums. I have a couple of 308 coolers I will be sending to them this fall.

To answer your original question about flow direction, the inner fitting (as mounted) is the IN, and the outer fitting is the Return.

And YES, Pacific Oil Cooler is the best choice, and worth every penny.

I will be sending my oil cooler in to Pacific Oil Cooler and I think i may have a leak up in there. Hopefully they can find it and repair it. In the unfortunate event they cannot repair it, is there a member on the forums that can provide a good used one?

Pacific Oil Cooler pressure tests and repairs coolers. If you give them a description of your suspected leak they will test for it, repair, and validate it.
