1984 3.2 - Diagnosing knocking - clanking

My '84 carrera makes a weird noise at idle. At idle sounds like rod knock. During revs it is less noticeable. when the motor is revving down, it is much louder.

I thought it was either a broken valve spring or a failed chain tensioner.

I pulled the motor, and both tensioners look okay and no broken valve springs.

How do I test the hydraulic chain tensioners to see if they are failing?

Sound seemed to come from the driver side.

The car has not been sitting. Has had around 3000 miles on it since it sat for a while.

You need to pull your cam chain covers off to inspect the tensioners. It can be done wi the engine in car.
