Wheels and Tires Fitment
Hello,
1989 Carrera 3.2. I have 7X17 front and 9X17 rear Euromeister Fuchs Replicas with 225/45R17 and 255/40R17 tires. Has anyone mounted these sizes on their 3.2 Carrera? Does this work? Do the tires rub? I do not want to modify my wheel arches(rolling). Did I buy the wrong size??? Any other considerations with this combination. I use my Carrera on the street for road trips. Carrera has US ride height. Thank you Gus |

up front even with 205/55 on a 7x16 you most probably will have rubbing issues up front if not rolling the fender lip and adjusting camber to negative a little.
the bulking of the tire side wall also sometimes can make the difference. For example a Continental SportContact is beefier than a Yokohama Advan. and if you lower the car to 63cm or lower, then you sure will. plus, with your wheel/tire combo you add up a good heap of unsprung mass.

The answer is "it depends." If you have issues, it'll more likely be at the front.
Not all 225s are the same width. If you have a particularly narrow 225 you're better off than if you have a wide 225. If you are running the factory zero camber setting you're worse off than if you are running some camber. If you're at stock height (there was no special US height on Carreras) that could help but not necessarily, as if you don't fit a large bump could have the tire snag a fender lip. And finally, every car is a little different. Don't know for sure on anything until you get there. The tl;dr answer is the rears *should* be fine, for the fronts you *might* be fine, though I think most people go with a 205 up front on those wheels.

w/a stock 3.2 and trans I usually prefer 215/45 & 245/40 on those wheels You loose little to no grip w/ the smaller tires because what you gain w/ the 225/255 in contact patch geometry you loose in sidewall flex on 7 & 9, Now if it were 8 & 9.5 that would be a different story

I have an '87 with the same Euromeister wheels and I went with the 215/45 & 245/40 as Bill recommends. Fit is perfect, no issues of any kind and they fill out the wheel arches nicely. With the stock 3.2 and g50, I can't imagine 'needing' more tire than that.
So, unfortunately, yes you may have purchased the wrong size. But if you are 'stuck' with those tires, try them on... they may still fit/work depending on the actual brand/model of tire and alignment settings of your car. |
