3.6 transplant exhaust... A California solution...

This is what we've come up with. It's an elegant bit of welding using the stock 993 header. Two separate equal length pipes incorporate a small race cat, glasspack muffler, then post cat. The right bank hosts the O2 sensor.

It is louder that stock. About "flowmaster loud" but it has that nice flax 6 pitch.

Moses, that looks really good, but I thought CA engine swaps were required to keep all the "original emissions equipment" of the later engine...meaning the stock cat. Are you betting that the techs won't know the difference, or is there an allowance in the rules to do this kind of thing?

Mark,

that looks damn nice. Are you going to plump heat at some point in the future? My setup (former Paul's) will be similar. It won't use cats though. My car is a 74 and I don't have to worry about smog any longer.

BTW: If someone is planning on something like that I have a set of 993 heat exchangers just like the ones pictured including flip-stud adapters (for 964 engine) for sale.

I hope your 993 will get unleashed this week.

Ingo

Colin, belive it or not but the cat belongs to the car. If the original car did not have a catalytic converter you won't need one for the transplant. That would also mean you would have to retain the original cat and not the 993 stock one if any. On the other hand I think you would be able to get by with the setup Mark is using. It all depends on how knowledgable the inspector will be.....

Believe it or not, up close it looks like a stock setup. The bends are elegant and the pipes exiting under the muffler are very symmetrical.

Strangely, California regulatons allow after market cats if the original is not serviceable.

Yes, I will be adding heat. I'm going to use one of Thoms RS bypass tubes. But right now I just want to DRIVE!

Great Job...soon I will post pics of my Euro spec exhaust (or Harald spec), I am told by Harald that it will be nice a low tones at lower rpms...then get a little loud at +3k rpm and LOUD at +5k rpm.

On 6 plugs, unfortunately. Took the car back to the shop yesterday. Hope to get it sorted out soon.

Looks like you found a great solution. Hope the motor gets running on all 12 plugs soon. I can't wait for the ***** eating grin post that is soon to come.

Aircraft Spruce follow the links > airframe parts > ducting. SCAT silicone tube is what you want.

Moses,

ACS (aircraft spruce) has loads of tubing but they are also expensive. Let me know if you want some more sources for SCAT/SCEET and other aircraft tubing suppliers.

Ingo,

What are you asking for the exhaust? Right now I am getting by with no Cat on my 3.2 but but am dreading what would happen if I get a spot check. When I get Bill's 3.6 installed have been thinking of working up a exhaust with a cat in it just in case.

Thx,

Joe

Moses, nice job but why do you have the tailpipes pointing at the ground like an econobox sedan?

So cruel.

Actually, I haven't decided on which 4" chrome Folgers tips to weld on.

Moses--Magneflow makes a 4" round tip that is only about 5" long which was exactly what I needed in the limited space I had. Stainless steel--around $35 each. Here's a pic.

Dean,

Fresno Air Parts 559 237 4863

Aircraft Supply 800 569 9397 (PA)

Chief Aircrafts Supply www.chiefaircraft.com (OR)

These are all good supply houses. If you are looking for aircraft quality hardware, go to any small airport and stop in the pilot shop. Ask for a "trade a plane" newspaper and there are hundreds of adverts there every week for suppliers.

Joe
