Oil lines to trombone not matching - bend the knee

So I am trying to put lines back on my car that once had them - (914 eng to 3.0 conversion)

I picked up a trombone on here as well as some lines locally. I am finding out that lines were bent differently for the years at least it seems that way and also my trombone doesn't look like it will work without major bending of one of the lines. The trombone has the factory clamp spot and the lines are kind of well the way they are. Anyone else experience this issue and need to do some bending? Also doesn't look like the clamp will do its job in the current spot as well.

On mine the two oil lines are parallel and nearly touching with the lower connection to the trombone maybe 4 inches behind the top line. Just guessing that your upper line is the one that has been deflected upward. These lines are fairly soft and easily bent with heat when off the car. I removed a bunch of dents from mine this way. I think that when the upper line is bent back parallel to the lower that you will find the trombone also mates well with the lower support.

Thanks for the info.

For some reason I feel like the upper one is a factory bend. The only reason I think that is the pelican upgrade article shows it as this, pic from the upgrade article below.

Garage
have the trombone cut back some, reflare the fittings and get a couple of soft lines to make up the difference. or do the right thing and get a proper cooler mounted and then get soft lines to mate.

earls coolers has a number of different cooler dimensions and fittings to accomplish a better alternative to a loop or two of brass. they come with "universal" mounting hardware that if at all inclined to do so you could creatively get something done.

or keep it up with mating the brass loop run around ive already noted and keep us posted on how things work out with a 911 part in a 914.

@juanbenae - this is a 77 911. It had a 914 put in it which is why it no longer had the oil lines.

Is there anything wrong with running a trombone on a 3.0? If I had $500 to drop on the carrera cooler then that would be an easy swap for sure.

Trombone cooler is quite adequate on most 3.0L. The Carerra cooler upgrade is usually done if the car is tracked/AX'd, or for perhaps engine longevity in warmer climates when A/C is run.

@MBAtarga Thanks Mark

This won't be tracked just driven every nice day. No A/C on this ride, well targa off, windows down.

A little persuasion is all it took, and running the lines above the mount like in Pelican's picture.

When I tried to do it in sections, I had trouble reinstalling my original trombone on my 3.0 Targa. It was much easier to put it together off the car, before reinstalling. You may need to do some bending, but whatever you do, it's going to be a lot easier with the whole thing out of the car! And taking it all down is really not a big project.

BTW: From what I've read and researched, the trombone works well with our 3.0 liter cars. You really don't need a cooler, unless you want one. Or regularly drive the car in some scorching wasteland -- like Queens. ;-)
