Help, $ wheel shipping to Canada?
We are finding it quite expensive to send a set of wheels from:
Sacramento, CA985821, to Canada (100 Mile House, BC, V0K-2E0) Thinking it would be 4 packages about 28x28x12" at about 45lbs each. Or, two packages at 28x28x28 @ 90lbs for shipping. Any thoughts or quotes? Thx.

The buyer should find a spot on the US side that is the closest to their location and pick it up at the local Fed-Ex, UPS or USPS agent location. He may have to drive a bit but it might be a LOT less expensive in the long run for him to get the wheels.
I'd do 2 boxes.

Please, do not use UPS to ship to your client. They will charge outrageous brokerage when it arrives in Canada. Use USPS (Which should be fine) or FedEx. I bought a set of wheels of someone in Washington, and despite my request to not use UPS and use USPS, he emailed to say "I went to USPS and they wouldn't give me guaranteed tracking or insurance, so I dropped them off at UPS" which ended costing me almost 300 bucks in "UPS tax" when it showed up. He may be a nice guy, but his ignoring my instructions still cost me $300 that he's not covering.
Sorry for the rant.

Use anything but UPS. They are the biggest rip off carrier when come to broker fees. FedEx ground is a good option. They do charge broker fees but not as outrageous as UPS. USPS is the best for shipping to Canada as long you packed them well and use smaller boxes if possible.

Thanks guys, good info. It is a big drive for him to come to Wash so we need to ship all the way.
Was hoping there was some type of Freight Forwarding Company instead of a FedX style shipper that might be more reasonable. All help is appreciated.

Common carrier. All four on a skid/pallet. Strap them and wrap them in shipping stretch wrap.

Canadian Freightways or the like might be an option for a pallet

UPS/Fedex is okay.... so long as you never put a declared value over $19 :P
Put like $25 tho... and 3 months later you'll get a bill for $24 brokerage

I'm in Bellingham, ship them to me at the airport and come down and pick them up! Simple

That sounds like a good idea. From 100 mile to Bellingham and back is only a day, and if its nice out, a good drive.
A couple years ago, i shipped four wheels in individual boxes from California to Edmonton. IIRC, it cost me about $120 CAD plus the brokerage fees. They were shipped Fedex Ground.

Ground freight is best, try yellow freight. You will have to pick up at their terminal, and you need to either have a broker, or clear customs on the item yourself.

+++ on no ups those guys once charged me $45 brokerage on a $39 heart rate monitor (for cycling not daily use
)I've had great luck with USPS and I've heard good things about Yellow. Domestically I'm had great service with Greyhound but I've never shipped cross border with them so I don't know about customs. As painful as it seems for us in Canada I shipped a pair of Fuchs to Germany today and the bill was $151

I recently had two Fuchs 9x16 replicas sent to Quebec,Canada from Sierra Madre Collection in California... They shipped both wheels together in one box via USPS and the cost of shipping was reasonable and i didn't get nailed with dutiy fees and brokerage.
I will look for my invoice and get back to you with the cost. They informed me that they ship a lot of wheels to Canada and that is the cheapest way to go ! |

You should consider Cargolution as a viable alternative. Their rates are quite fair.
