Race Mufflers Too Loud?

I have been kicking around the idea of installing the MKM11 race/track mufflers on my 79' 911 SC but I want to get some feedback on them first.

I plan on going with the SSI heat exchangers and an M&K 2-in 2-out muffler but I got to wondering just how loud do the race/track mufflers make it? I have searched for videos on it but I just can't be too sure on what most people have installed.

I have been around race cars for a very long time so I am hoping it would not be as loud as a full race exhaust.

If anyone does have any video or audio of the track setup up, I would greatly appreciate hearing it!

It's pretty much like running straight pipes. If you value your hearing and your relationship with your neighbors you may want to reconsider the track mufflers.

I’m running GT Racing muffled megaphones and love them. Super light and great sound. Are they loud? Maybe to some people but I don’t think they’re obnoxiously loud. My wife doesn’t think so either. You can even carry a conversation in the car with the windows down.

I have an ‘82 SC with MK 2x2. It’s a track car and the track I drive has an 88db limit. I can tell you that the set up sounds great. Any 2x2 will have drone unless modified in some way. I ended up plugging the drivers side outlet with an internal cap and installing a baffle in the passenger side. It’s still plenty loud but I make the sound restriction.

I ran the MK "shorty" track mufflers (track only) back in the day (3.2 w/SSIs) and they were shockingly loud. I was informally voted "loudest car at the track" once. I love a good exhaust but there's no way I would run these on the street. You'd be a rolling machine that sets off other people's car alarms (BTDT).

Gosh I remember when I developed the m&k track mufflers .. They were made just for goofing off on my car and then they were cheap enough that people wanted them for the same thing. There is no replacement for true muffler.

My car has had a quiet exhaust, factory, almost silent for too long. Full race exhaust is what I'm throwing on it. I don't care. It might annoy me and I might swap it for something else eventually, but I want obnoxiousness for a little while.

I made straight through pipes for my 2.3 liter, S-cammed hot rod using perforated tubing. They were not as loud as you would think since I packed fiberglass between OD of perforated inner tubes and the outer, conical pipes. Open intakes (K&N filters) generate more cockpit noise than the exhaust out the back. If you keep off the WOT performance mode of operation in town then they are fine.

Consider the noise those open exhausts the Harley riders like; a 911 generates a more interesting sound than the flatulent noises the hogs make.

What I meant to ask is do you get more or less drone when you have the exhaust exits out wide, or closer to a center exit?

Our Track Mufflers are just that, Track Mufflers. One step below open headers. They take the edge off open headers and add that bit of torque you get by extending the secondaries. Not recommended for street use.

All 2x2 mufflers do not audibly drone. The 2x2 layout does introduce the tendency but not the guarantee. The more quiet the muffler the less likely you will hear drone. Many things can contribute to the phenomenon and it's severity, from tailpipe length to the state of tune of the engine. Tailpipe location makes little difference, the exhaust path to each tailpipe and muffling being a larger factor.
For street use we have the Sport mufflers and Street mufflers or hybrids of both to get you the sound level and look you desire. If drone does rear it's ugly head we have non-invasive ways to combat it without disturbing the look and raspy sound.

I would also like to hear that!
Thanks for the insight Brian!
The 911R muffler is sitting in my cart right now.

I also have a friend who said he would borrow me his megaphones so maybe I will do just that for race weekends

I've had my eye on the GT muffled megaphones for a few years now. Want to pair with the headers of same manufacturer. Would also love to hear a sound clip.

How hard do you use the 'loud pedal' on the street?
If you REALLY want to use the car HARD on the street wouldn't it be nice if the cops didn't know what direction to be looking a couple blocks before you arrived?

To the OP- the MK 2 x 2 is loud. Its a terrific system and the fitment is dead balls on. But Ive seen a fair amount of folks trade in for a mellower set up after having for a short while. Maybe you could get to a P-car event to hear it in person. Plenty of folks run them. Videos of exhausts can be misleading.
