SC case splitting comments from a neophyte

Okay the title will ward of the engine rebuilding wizzards I'm certain.

I split my SC case today. I liked having Wayne's book to ensure I
had all the nuts off and the through bolts and their acorn nuts and washers and o-rings.

I found it interesting some o-rings were white and some brown.

1.) Contrary to Wayne's book the "rare" nut internal to the chain housing is 17 mm on an SC (not the 15 mm stated, I'm sure the size changed with the SC).
2.) There is another lip on the SC not show in Wayne's book (up on the top on the non oil cooler side of the case of course, I'm sure it's there to aid in the splitting process).
3.) Several successive taps on the same place did the split for me. (maybe just happenstance though). But as I did many single taps (at each location) spanning the globe, I had little luck getting much motion.
4.) was interesting top part of the case split first (was most apparent) even though most of the tapping occurred on the bottom corners.

Anyway case is split, and innards are out, rods off the crank!
lots of cleaning follows and prep for machine shops!

Thanks to many for their help in this journey!

Excellent news. I congratulate your nerve. Do post pictures. What do your bearings look like?

(I did this a few years ago. It was a good decision)

Thanks Dru! It started off with car to be painted ... wanted to pull the engine ... then a guru whose helped me many times over the years suggested getting those valve guides done 😀.

Then he found some 3.2 cylinder, adding some 9.5 compression pistons too, and Fabspeed poor mans SSI. Sent pump off for flow improvement

Main bearings (light in photo makes look worse). I thought all bearings look great.
Only 115k miles and oil changed yearly. 930 bearings.

Cam holders after cleaning:

Here is my dash recovered

Plan to make a detailed check list for assembly which I can check off.
Building it from Wayne’s book and other comments I’ve received. I’ll note the pages for each checklist item too.

Did not get “your” courage to tackle the rear Targa glass myself, my painter and his glass man will do this.

Do you like your 964 cams? How is the street driving with them? Are they stock cams timed differently or whole new cams?

Taking the targa glass out is not a problem, the real fun is in the install as I did it by myself.
I did not install the defroster wiring to the chagrin of the next owner, of course he wasn’t there to help.

Stock SC cams can be reground to 964 profile. There's a bunch of companies that do it but it requires you to send them out (send the rockers along too - they'll need to be freshened up). Timing them is another story, but most folks time 964 cams in an SC to 1.25mm+/-.1

I wouldn't worry about missing low end torque with the 964 cam grind. Increasing to 9.5:1 compression will give you roughly the same bottom end torque, then the cams come on and you get that awesome pull to 6500 instead of the weezy top end of a stock SC.

The 964 cams are different cams. There is a board consensus about optimal cam timing, but I don't remember it off the top of my head.

I like the motor after the cams, but there were other changes so it's hard to know what is due to cams, what is due to proper FI setup, etc. If you are moving away from CIS, it's possible to go more aggressive- E or S cams, or one of the specialists (Dougherty, Webcam, etc.).

The only wear on my bearings was the intermediate shaft bearing and the thrust bearing (#8, I think). Both had plenty of life left, but showed some copper.

Updates after splitting case:

Cleanup, and getting ready for JB weld. Still need to clean the sealer off the case lip.
And spray out the piston oil sprayer circuit. And final stud thread clean out checks and at least a few other things before the crank goes in.
