'77 Spare Tire Question

I'm trying to revive a '77 911S barn find. One of those "was running when I parked it several years ago" stories. A little wrinkle to the issue is that the car is about 5 hours away. So, in anticipation of this little adventure, I'm thinking of what tools/spares/parts to bring along (any advice welcome).

One thing I've thought of is tire condition. I may not want to drive back 6 hours at highway speeds on old tires, but I would think that a car parked indoors for several years would still have tires that hold air. But if one or two of them don't, can I pull the collapsible spare off my '87 930 (or an SC or Carrera) to use just to get the thing rolled onto a AAA flatbed?

Use a trailer.
The collapsible spares will work.
You could also try a can or two of Fix a Flat.

you may have bad gas issues and that leads to cis issues.. Seized brakes? Old brake and fuel lines? Dead battery?

Trailer is the better line of defense.

Expecting to revive and then drive a car for 6 hours is wildy optimistic imho. I presume you have pics of the car and know what you are up against though and confident in you skills.

Credit Card.
Internet access.
Spare fuses/relays
Spare alternator belt
Spare tire (any collapsable from 911/930/944 etc would fit)
Tire pump
WD40
Wrenches
Fire Extinguisher

So.. your original note mentions
1) driving back 6 hours on old tires and
2) hauling it on a AAA Flatbed.

So, you are hedging your bet? Hoping to get it running and drive it home? or will try to drive it home but know you are in for an AAA tow haul home.. or some combo thereof

A bit off topic, but there’s a great book by Rob Siegel (the BMW Club tech columnist) called Ran When Parked that tells of his adventure in picking up, resurrecting, and driving an old BMW 2002 back home from a long distance away. It should tell you that a trailer is by far your best choice unless you have lots of time, tools, spares, and mechanical skills.

Thanks! That's the info for which I was looking.

I know it's wildly optimistic to wake up a garage find from hibernation and drive it 350 miles home. That's not Plan A.

But I have relatives about 20 miles away. I could take the car there temporarily, to get it sorted/new fluids/new tires/etc. That might not be an unreasonable distance to drive, if the car starts up. Syncroid's shop, RMG, is also another 10-15 miles down the road, for professional help. If I can't get the car started/moving/stopping from where it's been stored, then I could AAA it to one of those two locations.

Regardless, this will be a bit of an adventure--either of inspiration and good fortune, or foolishness if you ask Mrs. Noah. I'll keep the board posted if/when it happens. You guys won't even have to order the book from Amazon--you'll be able to read about it right here!

Uhaul local trailers are like $50 if you have a vehicle available to pull one.
