8 Pin CDI Rebuild

I am almost finished with my 76 930 motor and need to sort out ignition. I have looked at the usual suspects that rebuild CDI boxes but many don't support the 8-pin CDI boxes. Does anyone have a recommendation for a trusted vendor to go through my 8-pin CDI? Thanks!

Did you contact Pelican user ischmitz?

Years ago,
I needed my 76 turbo 8 pin rebuilt and sent it to Zims in Texas
Try Bob Ashlock, on PP.

Bob Ashlock rebuilt my 8 pin cdi a few years back.

We can put our modern electronics in your 8 pin case or we have a complete 8 pin replica box.

I used a 6 pin on my 77 930. Eliminate the two wires that go to that condenser looking module attached to the panel, get a 6 pin plug and swap the wires from the 8 pin plug in the correct order.

+1 for Bob Ashlock. Good guy, great work, fair prices, quick turn-around. What more could you ask for?

Another vote for Bob Ashlock.

Those Bosch CDI units are very reliable and rarely if ever fail. Many assume that this CDI has failed because it doesn't buzz
like the 3/6 pin Bosch units. Do a Google search for its part numbers; 0 227 300 002, 0 227 300 003, various rebuilders.
Typically the problems are; a bad 12V power input or a bad distributor signal, both easily checked with a volt/ohm meter.

Avoid using the Bosch silver coils with any CDI units

A 6 pin box won’t drive an early Turbo tacho. You’ll need one of Bob’s adapters too.

It looks like Bob is the go to guy. Thanks for the recommendations!

Seems to drive mine.

Check the year of the tacho, probably a later one.

8 pin boxes produce a 400V positive spike to drive the tacho. The tacho on the early Turbo is therefore more like a 69/70 tacho (that was driven direct from the coil). 6 pin boxes are just 12v so will only drive the low voltage ones (as fitted to the later Turbo).

8 pin boxes will drive tachos designed for 12v but I can’t imagine it is very good for the tacho!

Thanks, I'll check the date stamp.

the Bosch CDI is a 50 year old design with 50 year old components.

A modern CDI is much much better. Even having a soft rev limiter is great plus more spark.

Best day of my life is when I dumped that old Bosch!! My 911 came alive with a good modern unit.

I know you won't agree. Loren
