1982 911 starting problem

I recently have had issues with the car not starting on the first few tries. While driving, the engine just died as if you turned the key off and restarted. Now the starter will engage but will not start at all. The instrument gauges as do not work with the key on. Is this an ignition switch issue? Thanks for any advice.

First thing I would do is run it by my mechanic, see what he thinks then see if we concur.
