3.0 Carrera next steps

A few years ago, I purchased a 1975 911 from a friend's father. I had seen the car since the late 1990's and told him when he was ready to sell, I would buy it. He bought the car in Germany in the early 80's during a deployment with the Air Force. He liked it so much, he brought it home. As I understand the story, the car is a 1975 model (9115100753) that was crashed and re-constructed in the form of a 930 including the steel flares, tail, and gauge cluster. It appears the engine was swapped with a 3.0 liter unit (#666034) from a 1976 Carrera. There is no California emission's equipment.

The car runs and drives okay, but will require a complete restoration. I always liked it because it had the form that I grew to love as a kid, it was inexpensive, and as a 1975 model, it is exempt from California emissions. In speaking with a mechanic, I understand the engine is valuable. I put it up on my lift over the weekend and began poking around considering options.

I am thinking about doing the body work and restoring the mechanics to create a fun driving car. A few have advised me to sell the engine and upgrade to something from the mid 80's. Any opinions?

#666034 would have been the 34 C3 engine produced in '76. It's a nice motor, but I don't believe that it is particularly more valuable than some other 3 liter cis motors.

The thing that makes these 3 liters different from the later SC motors is the crankshaft, the '76 & 77 C3 used the crank and flywheel from the 2.7 motors, it is somewhat lighter and will rev a bit more quickly that the later SC crank/flywheels which were taken from the 930 motors.

All 3.0 from '76 thru '83 used cis and had the same cams, through the '80 SC bigger ports were used but cr was raised so that an '81 -83 RoW produced 204hp as opposed to the C3 200hp. The in between SCs from '78 to had 180 hp an 188 for the '81s, US would generally be less.

If you were going to the expense of a new motor a 3.6 from a 993 would be the way to go

The things I se that are off in the pic
1) stance is awul, the front needs to come way down, probably the rear too, but you want a slight nose down
2) the 930 fenders are aftermarket not stock, the right wheels would go a long way to making it more fun. The aero on the 930 body is pretty bad, you want all the motor you can get
3) the tail is correct for a turbo body but I think it looks odd, and if its an oe it's really heavy

Most of these older cars need bushes, might was well upgrade the t-bars while in there, that will help get rid of the excess lean they develop.

You are right on about the stance, it does not drive well. In fact, it is scary.

I am thinking that someone who has a 1976 Carrera would like this engine; thinking I should start searching. The 993 engine is a good idea and I looked at a few options and it seems like a fun project. Really excited to begin studying and considering options! Thank you for the insight. If anyone else has thoughts, please share.
