What to do regarding rusty flywheel? 3.0 SC / 914-6 Swap
I'm starting an SC swap into my 914... I'm gonna grab the Kennedy adapter ring for 9-bolt flywheels and a 225mm clutch kit to keep my 901 trans but I didnt think I should simply ignore this rusted flywheel. It all seems to be superficial surface rust so... let it soak in a rust dissolver solution or de-ruster? Brake-clean and some steel wool? Scotch-brite and CLR? What do you think...
Edit: I do plan to take it off to inspect and most likely replace the RMS. ![]()

Install the clutch, it'll clean where it runs

can you drop it off at a machine shop and have them media blast it and then chuck it on the lathe to ensure a flat surface?
Without knowing more than I do, thats what I'd do if it were me.

That's what I initially thought but figured I'd ask. Thanks.

Yeah I probably can. I guess better safe than sorry but I don't think anything is questionable with it's true-ness.

I think if you put the 3L in the 914 you will need to change the flywheel anyway.

Nah, the stock 225mm 9-bolt flywheel stays on the 3.0 engine and Kennedy (or Patrick MS) offers an adapter ring "kit" to mate a 228mm clutch which works with the stock 901 trans clutch operation

I don't think sand/media blasting is a good idea as it would leave a much rougher surface than normal and maybe make it "grabby." I would Scotchbrite the devil out of it then reinstall and let normal usage do the rest.

Have it resurfaced at a machine shop.

+1. In the old days, when we changed clutches we had our flywheels turned to remove grooving from worn out driven (clutch) plates and to make sure they were flat and true from warping due to heat.
Is the ring gear pressed on? I easily installed a new one on a different car by heating the ring and putting the flywheel in the freezer. It fell in place.

Blanchard grinding is the best option, IMO.

After speaking to several other people, I think the move it to either lightly scotchbrite it (if there is no reason to believe the flywheel is pitted or warped) OR just have it resurfaced at a local machine shop. I think the 2nd option is probably not cost prohibitive so I'll probably just do that. Thanks everyone
