Auto meter Tach Problems

I have an auto meter tach in my car and I am getting RF Interferance I think. It works great until I get to high RPMs then it starts to jump around. Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Thanks for the help

Don't know directly what it could be but, are you using shielded spark plug wires?

jake raby on the 914 pp board was looking for a more accurate tach at high rpms. do a search and see what he came up with.

are you running points or electronic conversion?

Vinatge, since you say you've got a Crane CD unit, and I've been researching MSD and Crane recently -- are you using a tach adapter? Did the tachstart misbehaving when you installed the Crane, or just all of a sudden?

Here is a quote from the Crane manual on troubleshooting noise:
1)Make sure a ground strap is installed between engine and chassis.
2) Make sure that [electronic stuff like gauges] are grounded direct to the chassis.
3) ...Make sure the HI-6 (Crane unit) is grounded direct to chassis. Keep the ground wire under 6 inches.
4)Replace spark plug wires with spiral core type wire. Put dielectric grease on the rotor tip and all igh voltage terminals. Use only resistor sparkplugs on the street.

Are most people taking the tach wire off the - side of the coil or are they running it off the tachoutput on the Crane or MSD Unit??

www.cranecams.com has the manual with several proper hookup diagrams. I'd start there.
