340 Ft Lbs Torque On Stub Axle

I have done the search and can't determine whether a quality high end 1/2" impact wrench will get the stub axle nut off of an 87' Carerra. Has anyone successfully done this? Can someone confirm the nut size at 32mm. If this fails, i will buck up and get a 3/4" drive socket, a gigantic breaker bar and drop it off the jack stands.

I don't believe the 1/2" will do it. I used a 1" breaker with a 4" steel pipe to get mine off. A 3/4 would probably work; I used the 1" cause I got the use of it free from work. I can't remember the nut size, someone will chime in soon with the info tho.

I can't say if an impact wrench would do it, though I bet that's how the pro's do it. How many ft-lbs of torque does your impact wrench deliver?

Anyway, yes it is 32mm and yes, you need at least 3/4" drive hand tools. I bent a 1/2 drive Craftsman tool (thank goodness for the warranty). Bought a cheap 3/4" drive set from Harbor Fright and it worked great - with three feet of 1" cheater pipe.

If you were closer you would be welcome to borrow my set (offer open to all SoCal Pelicans).

I thought those were 240 ft/lbs... Or is that only on SC's?

Wrench says it delivers 450 ft lbs or so.

Yeah, the deciding factor would be the rating of the wrench, mine goes 25-250, so I'm sure I would ruin it. I think you need something bigger. Of course putting it back with the right torque could be ugly too.

Putting it back to the right torque should be easy. from what I understand, 170 lbs (me), at two feet out on a breaker bar equals 340 foot Lbs of torque.

As far as I can tell, the stub axles on the 87 Carrera are 340 lbs
SC's I believe are different all together.

I've removed them with my 1/2" impact wrench. My Ingersol Rand 2131 is rated at 600+ft in reverse. I've since been told that it is bad for the wheel bearings to use an impact wrench to remove the axle nut. When I install them I get a helper to keep the socket pushed on the nut (with their foot) while I step on the wrench.

Good point Chris - when I tightened mine I supported the socket/extension with a jack stand as close to the wheel/nut as I could get it.
