Turbo tie rod install

I have a 3mm gap between my tack and my turbo tierods. Is this normal? I hope not. Can I install a washer/spacer?

Washer = rack stop, but is also a spacer

The kit should come with the two thick washers. If you don't use them, the tie rod joint will hit and damage the track end seal and possibly do internal damage to the pinion or the puck.
When tightening the tie rod ends, use a wrench to counter-hold one tie rod, while tightening the opposite end. This will prevent damage to the pinion or puck.

How far does the boot go inboard? It seems like the outboard (small end) of the boot should be on top of the end piece on the tie rod. Does anyone have any photos to show how they installed their turbo tie rod boots?

I have a kit I haven't installed yet. Seeing the comments above, I measured the washers for you and found that they are about 1-3/4" diameter. They are definitely bigger than the end piece. Yours seem too small.

If the only purpose of the washer is a spacer does the OD matter?

The washer is a rack stop

The washer comes up against the end of the rack casting, stopping the rack from traveling any further.
If you rotate the pinion, you will see that the inner Tie rod end goes into the rack and hits the end seal/rack bearing. You need the washer to Stop the tie rod end from doing this.

The inboard part of the boot extends onto the lip of the rack casting. Should be an obvious depressed lip there for the boot and boot ring to fit onto. It looks like you have the right turbo tie rod boots, they are longer than the non turbo tie rod boots fyi.

Does the boot need to be pushed further inboard so it is flush with the disc on the tierod

Actually I'm not sure. it's been a while since I've done the install. This is how I had mine setup. If I recall, I didn't use the wire retaining rings on the outboard discs because the boot was a tight fit and when it set down in the lip, it was flush on the end. Not sure if I'm right here.

Boot retention

The boot snaps onto the rubber disc on the tie rod. If you are a bit anal, like me and want to make sure it stays there, you could use a tie wrap on the boot to secure it to the disc.
BUT, it needs to be able to rotate, so when the tie rod is turned to set the toe, the rod can rotate, relative to the boot, or you are going to posssibly damage the boot.

Isn't experience a wonderful teacher? Never mind about what people say about smart people...

No need for a tie wrap on the outboard end of the boot. Once it is snapped onto place on the outside of the rubber disc on the tie rod it should stay in place all on its own.

As for the washer. The previous post are correct, you need the large diameter wash as it functions as a steering stop to limit rack travel. Without it you are putting your rack at risk. The washers are inexpensive enough that it is worth buying replacements if you can't find the ones that came with the kit.
