3.6 exhaust - final stages of the project

Today, I completed my exhaust for the 3.6 It's Paul's old setup. I liked the sound and simplicity of it a lot. Two Magnaflow highflow mufflers attached to 993 heat exchangers. As simple as that. The left banks hoists the oxygen sensor. At low RPM's it grumbles and when you open it up it sounds like there is no tomorrow.

I might at some point add nice stainless steel tips for the looks. Right now the the tips are sort of hidden behind the valance. I like the sleeper look. Mustangs will still wonder what has hit them long after I zipped by. The swap will take place when I return from my Europe trip in the middle of April. I can't wait to get it done.

Very nice!

Can't wait to hear a sound file.

Not worried about smog inspection? (I just noticed it's a '74) EXCELLENT!

Nope, the 74 should be fine for two reasons: It is excempt and it did not come with a cat in the first place.

I'll do a sound file as soon as the motor is up and runing. You might however upgrade your speakers to do it justice.

How's your's doing. Any progress this weekend?

I will pick up the car on Thursday, running or not. There is a goog chance I will NOT have a running car next week. If that happens, I will be desperately seeking someone to sort out this motor for me.

Nice, can you compare the sound to Paul's new Fabiani/B&B setup?

Bill,

I think Paul should be the one to write up a detailed comparison. He had both setups on his car. One comment he made was that he felt the car was a little faster with the 993 headers. But he also wondered if that is just a result of getting more used to the car.

From what I remember the dual magnaflow had a lower rumble to it. When he took my brother for a spin he kept it down in the residential area. But when he opened it up I could hear them five blocks away.

When we listened to the new setup this weekend it was inside the garage idling. Once I have my motor in we will listen to it side by side and record sound clips of each.

I mounted the oxysensor this weekend and learned one lesson: Never let a muffler shop work on something unless it is in the car and they can see it.

Apparently the oxysensor port got added while the muffler was not mounted to the engine and in the car. So the shop picked a location randomly. As a result the port is located so that I had to cut a hole into the rear sheetmetal to clear the oxysensor. It now pokes through the sheetmetal up into the engine bay and clears !!the distributor!! by about 1mm. At first I thought I had to remove the distributor to get it mounted. The cable would interfere with the bottom of the dizzy. Once the thread is all the way in it clears it.

I'll post pictures of it later. It's so hidden that it is even hard to get a descent piture of the problem. God forbid I ever have to take that thing apart again.

I think Ingo fairly describes the difference in the sound. The magnaflow / 993 set up has more of a bass tone than the Fabspeed / B&B set up. The tone of the former is also more uniform through the RPMs, whereas the latter seems to get a little quieter. The best way I can descibe it is the differece between a transam race car and a F1 car. If Ingo has the technology well take a audio of the two and post them next month.

Here is a picture of the awkward location of the oxygen sensor. It pokes through the sheetmetal and barely clears the distributor. I hope it will not be a temperature issue. Any thoughts?

ingo,
take a small rubber fuel line, split it down the side and place it around the hole you cut. This will assist with protecting the sensor from vibrating against the engine tin, and also help keep the heat below the tin as well look good. Just an idea for ya.

I don't think fuel line rubber will withstand the temperatures we are talking about. The sensor body might easily reach several hundred degrees centigrade I would assume.
