On standing out from the crowd ...

I discovered early on that driving my car around town was more an event than simply a drive. Today, though, was a banner day.

* A panel van cruises past slowly at a light. The driver yells "Porsche killed Americans". I guess this must be a WW2 sentiment...

* The all-to-common honks, etc.

* A teenager that must have broken his neck snapping around to watch me drive by.

* A guy in an old Ford yells "nice porsh!"

* The police car that tailed me for two miles. It finally pulled along side at a light. The driver smiles and nods. Bubba in the passenger seat glowers. I replied "Hi!" with my best "what, me?" face.

Fortunately, the police got behind AFTER my two rips up and down Kirby Road (those Pelicanheads near McLean, VA know of where I speak!). The car still had track tires from this weekend's AX. Hopefully, the folks that live along Kirby thought is was just Green912 on a test run! ;)

Can anyone relate?

Yes, I think everyone here can relate. I feel sheepish if Im not wearing sunglasses when I drive - Ive never been in a car that attracts so much attention. Its not always a good thing, but it can be fun. :D

You should try it with this tail some time:

Can't wait to get back to the ducktail.

cstreit 03-24-2003 06:38 PM

Jack, just make sure you use Grade 8 bolts for setting the angle on that thing. If it broke a bolt and accidentally turned upwards you'd likely take off...

Strange as they may look, those things work wonders in the good clean air up there. Are you still gonna keep the duck tail?

HA! I'm afraid the sump plate would get ground off.

APKhaos 03-24-2003 07:14 PM

Ahhh....let me think.....a pristine green 1972 911RS with gleaming paint and freshly minted Fuchs sporting track rubber.........

Nobody would notice that, right?

Its a sweet car, Greg. Even Bubba gets it.

The ducktail is good for street driving and R Gruppe stuff. You're right -- the big tail is an enormous plus on the track.

Adam 03-24-2003 07:28 PM

Are you going to keep the 964 lid, Jack? I wonder how it'd look on the widebody...

Probably pretty cool.

Well... er... It's, well, kinda really filthy from the skidpad at AX school this weekend. :o And, the track rubber is on the nasty, mismatched Fuchs. His partner gets it, but I'm pretty sure Bubba thought I was a criminal. The car sure looks the part!

But not to worry! She'll be back in gleaming form in time for this weekend's Fun Run!! :)

Greg? The guys at Woody Creek would have been proud of you! ;)

Fassi 03-24-2003 08:24 PM

rs911t,

Kirby Rd is ok, but have you mastered Georgetown Pike from 123 to 7?

kstylianos 03-25-2003 07:09 AM

Fassi,

I have;)

Beautiful and fun to drive. Its not common to find that road empty though:(

rs911t 03-25-2003 07:25 AM

Georgetown Pike is great, but as Charlie said almost impossible to find clear. Old Dominion to Swinks Mill. Next time you're stuck behind someone in a minivan, try Swinks Mill. Short, but sweet!

Hey Jack,

You should cruise the LA streets on Saturday nights with that tail....

You would lots of guys tail envy, except yours ACTUALLY serves a purpose.

You are going to keep the 964 spoiler.... aren't you Jack ?
That was one of BBI's fine points.... keeping the sleek original shape of an early 911, but then benefiting from the downforce at higher speed generated by the late spolier !!

Hi guys,

How about Towlston road over Rt 7, turn right at teh first stop sign by the big house that sits down real low. I think its Bellview road, now that ones fun.

( Igrew up in McLean and went to McLean high school, my parents still live out there and I am tryign to think of a reason to bring the 911 back there to tear up some of my favorite old roads, smile).

Is there an organized fun run this weekend? I seem to have lost the link to the BB that was set up for all the NOVA/DC Pelican Heads. A link would be cool....and since my car is back on the road now I'd be interested in finally making some fun runs this year :D

Nathan

rs911t 03-25-2003 08:28 AM

Oh yeah, Bellview/Towlston roads are awesome!

Nathan, yes there is a run Saturday. See http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/ for details.

JmuRiz 03-25-2003 08:32 AM

Thanks buddy, I hope i will make it...to show off some new parts...even if it is on a lowly 914 :D

Nathan
