inside of distributor, it is too dirty? - 1076 911S

Does the inside of the distributor look a little 'dusty' to you? 1976 911S.

I am trying eliminate any possible causes of why my car intermittently cuts out. The cut our is sharp, lasts less than a second, and is very intermittent, like twice in a 30 mile drive. I have cleaned fuse contacts, cleaned a few of the ground points, changed the coil, changed the CDI wiring, and just changed the cap, rotor, and coil wire (I accidentally pulled the old coil wire apart).

Nope.
But from the looks of the chips in the driveshaft recess, it looks like the rotor has been forced on a few times.
Make sure the orientation is somewhere close before attempting to install.
I think your problem lies elsewhere.

My car would do that. Two issues in my case. The CDI unit was intermittent and there was a loose plug or connector under the dash that went from the ignition switch to the fuse block.

Sometimes the car would go dead and I would reach under the dash and hit the plug and it would start right up.

After it died another time a friend came over to check it out. He hit the CDI with a screwdriver handle and it was back to normal.

So you will just have to keep checking I guess.

I doubt the distributor itself could be the cause. But I would put a dwell meter on it to make sure you are getting a consistent reading from the points. Also make sure the shaft will move, by twisting, to operate the advance weights and there is no up and down movement.

Wiggle test. Systematically wiggle all the 12v wiring in the engine bay while it is running.

how long has it been since someone pulled all the guts out and re-greased it?

40 years?

there is an old thread on here by Warren - Early 911S man about doing this - if you can figure out his exact user name that will help you find it - IIRC, I posted a question on it re dual drive 964 units if that helps

Warren is one of the guys who should have all his posts saved in a compilation...

I'd also toss the pints (and the business card you keep handy for emergency cleaning) and put in a Hall effect sensor
