Targa Bar Pics

Ok, I'm off to the powdercoater with my Targa cover. I need a picture of what one is supposed to look like as I, believe it or not, have never seen a factory finish. They can match any color and any texture and I have a distinct feeling these things came kinda wrinkly. Can somebody go shoot a pic and send it to me at
cilurso.rj@shaw.af.mil? I'll take grand attempts at describing it as well.

It's supposed to be black by the way not stainless

Hello, Are you sure you wanna Powder coat your Targa Bar?
The reason I ask, Powders don't hold up to ultra violet light
very well.
The sun will fade it pretty fast. and after all the work of removing it and the re install it seems like allot of work to have to perform this again in the near future.

Well anyway.. Just My 2 cents.

Here is a stock, never been touched 76 Carrera bar. I believe that most people paint them.

Bill;
This has nothing to do with powder coating, I was interested in your car, namely, what upgrade did you do to your brakes and what (or from whom) did you get your front and rear bumpers. I really like the look.
Thanks,
Mke

There have been several posts on this topic, with images if I remember correctly. Try searching posts.

By the way, there are UV resistant powder coatings available.

RJ,

If you are seeking a finish even 'close' to the factory finish, powder coating won't do it!

The original finish is a 'textured' flat two-part Black polyurethane. it is similar in appearance to 'spatter' paint sometimes used inside trunks of US cars ... but, much more uniform speck size and even distribution. The following page from the service manual describes the refinishing process, and it is quite UNIQUE!

That's priceless Warren. Although you haven't surprised me for a couple of weeks, that takes the cake! Not sure I'd take a grinder to a Targa bar though. Perhaps a chainsaw would be more gentle.

I wonder if it's the same paint use to texture the seat side brackets on out non sport seats? I certainly haven't found a can that can do it (yet...better check Wurth's range).

Matt,

I guess the powder coater could take it out while still hot ... try shooting a bit of washed concrete sand on to the gooey powder with a sand-blasting gun at low pressure, thet let it cool, and shoot another layer of powder ...

My money says it won't work, though!

It was painted when I got it and it looked like crap. So I re-did it. With all the stress of the Targa top up there and me taking it off every other day the paint wore off in places. Only lasted a year and I did take my time to ensure a good finish. I was unaware of the UV aspect of the powders. Hmmm. Not sure what I'll do now. Maybe I could spray it with Worth's and have my body guy stick it in the oven. I dunno. I use the car way to much to expect it to stand up to an ordinary rattle can.

Has anyone had experience with a body shop respraying their targa bar? Looking at the process i would expect that few shops have done this sort of work before. I am in the Phila area if someone knows a shop thats done this work in the area... trader220@aol.com

Guy's Powder coating can be shot in just about any surface texture you want. From a light texture to heavy.. thay can even put a wrinkle finish on it if you want. Textures are determined by formulation of the Powder has nothing to do with preperation.
