MFI Belt Replacement Question...
I need to replace my MFI Belt.
I have looked in the factory manuals and found the following instructions: 1) Go past cylinder 4 or the fan pulley to the FE mark. 2) Line up the mark on the pump cog to the mark on the pump case. 3) loosen bolt that allow it slide a bit and replace the belt. Is this it, or is there more? The MFI was working great before this belt broke and I'm hoping to not mess with it too much in fear of making it worse. Will it be necessary to remove any sheet metal to do this? Please let me know if I'm missing anything. thanks, Ian |

Ian, I've never changed an MFI belt myself. But from what I've read in the early 911S registry newsletter, it's not as simple as that. If you misalign or do something wrong, it can be costly. For example, Wes at MSI showed me the cog pulley they removed from Evren's '71 E...every cog was worn flat, because a previous wrench had made the belt too tight, or possibly misaligned it. It was an ugly sight! When/if I lose that belt? I'll call for a flatbed tow...

Thats pretty much it except you can adjust the pump pulley independently from the index by loosening up the socket head screws on the face of the pump pulley and rotating the pulley relative to the pump shaft. This will allow alignment of the pump marks if the belt is slightly off. Usually the belt will go on without this adjustment but if the mark is off you have it . You will need to clean the front of the pump to find the mark also use a mirror and patience. When tightening the belt keep the pump straight relative to the engine centerline to maintain pulley alignment.
I have found taking lots of Advil before tackling this project makes it less painful, my back gets sore. |
