Officially desperate. Need mechanic to finish 3.6 project.
My motor is in. Running badly on one distributor. It is a '97 euro 993 motor in a 1983 SC.
All other issues have been sorted out. Unfortunately, I have neither the time or expertise to tackle this myself. I returned my car to the mechanic on Thursday. It is now Tuesday and there has been no progress. He has had my car since October 2002. Can anyone recommend a competent wrench? Preferably in the East Bay, anywhere from Walnut Creek to Pleasanton would be great, but I will travel if I need to. Thanks for your help.

Moses--
You might give John at Valhalla in Lafayette a call. Its only a two man shop so there might be a small wait, but he's always been straight with me, though I've only had him do minor stuff on mine so far (valves, tune up, brakes, etc.) (a top end rebuild is somewhere in the future though). His number is 925.284.2844. I've also heard good things about Deutche Motorsports in Concord (Tom Martenot (sp?) - advertises in Pano & Excellence, I believe. And there's Kahlers down in Dublin. No experience with either of them, but have heard good things. good luck!

If you are really serious - call Sport Haus in Reno ( http://www.sporthausinc.com )- talk to Matt Lawerence. He is THE MAN when it comes to 3.6 swaps and the like. His cars are always the fastest at the Time Trials (he usually wins with his car too).
It will be worth trailering it to Reno - labor rates are a little lower there than the Bay Area as well. JrDavid68 1896 Carrera

John Larson is close to that area, I think he's a little south, around Santa Maria. he installed the 3.6 in Mike Zois' SC cab.

There's a couple shops in Sacramento that I've worked with that have dealt with 3.6L swaps.

I've also been referred to Tom Martenot in Concord, but found his prices a little high. Took my 79SC to Pete at PBR Restorations in Crockett. His number is 510-787-2200. He upgraded my chain tensioners and has a solid reputation.

Moses,
I know it's probably a drive (or a tow) for you but I would have to say that TRE Motorsports in hollywood would be a sure thing. http://tremotorsports.com/Contacts.html I haven't had any work done by them but I have purchased a couple of grand worth of parts and Dave Bouzaglou is a straight up guy. He posts to this BBS and his outfit is who did Jack Olsen's BBII. I feel for ya, you know my story.... Last edited by Embs; 03-25-2003 at 05:00 PM.. |

Todd, I agree w/ TRE recommendation, but 400+ miles is a long way to go for what sounds like a minor problem for the right wrench. Can't imagine what it would cost to flatbed a car from S.F. to L.A.

How many "right wrenches" and cash can a fellow burn through before the issues actually get resolved? As many "minor problems" as Moses has had I would think 400 miles for some solid proof of what is wrong and what the actual remedy is would be money well spent. We are all just speculating from our keyboards on what the issues are with his car, they may not be minor. If it were my car and I lived where Moses did, it would be on the truck to Hollywood right now. After much PM'ing I know that Moses and I have had many similar issues with the 3.6 transplant process. I drove over 600 miles to get: bent over, spanked, and lied about by the supposed MASTER of 3.6 transplants. So 400 miles for absolute satisfaction is well worth it. |
