Birmingham Alabama 915 rebuild
Hi Gang - Anyone have a list of qualified 915 trans rebuilders near Birmingham Alabama? I will need them to remove it as well. Not allowed to wrench in the driveway anymore
![]() I have always used Eurasian Auto to work on my 79 911sc but want to know of other options. Only has 88K on it but engaging 2nd is rough. Double declutch works fine but.. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion but she is ready for a tear-down to sort it properly.

Euarasian has always been my go to shop in town ever since I had Yoda do the PPI for me long ago. Just wanted to learn of other options from those in the know. Time is not an issue so if there is a good old boy that knows his beans and does this on the side and may save me a few $$ I can put that money right back into more parts and get closer to something ridiculous like you are rolling in

You aren’t far from Atlanta. Call Tom:
https://www.cogscogs.com/ Great experience. He really knows his stuff.

Not sure how much room there is to save money on these builds. The labor is static, my guy charged $500 plus parts. The parts are what have gone up ridiculously in price.

Slight objection. Tom is way up in Cleveland, GA, and I would tread with caution with his shop. PM for details if you want more. If you're heading to Atlanta there is a great little shop in Suwanee just off exit 111 from I-85. He has all the tools and knows how to use them. https://europeanmotorrepair.com/

Agree with RarlyL8
Agree with RarlyL8. Labor is static, but like most older cars, parts are beginning to be harder to find, and scattering the innards of a 915 is not something I would want done by just anyone. Your description of problem sounds like synchro or even just a shifter issue. Bill (Yoda?)is no longer at Eurasian, but Casey is one of his finest pupils.

Casey and his crew are indeed awesome. Bill (Yoda) was a real character. They are the only ones that have ever worked on my junky old car. I've nothing but great things to say about them.

$500 labor is brother pricing on a 915. If you’ve got a local guy who knows what he’s doing who offers that to the general public have him do it. More common is $800-1000, with a whole lot more if any of the service work requires resetting the ring and pinion. And given how often 915s have spun bores and need machine work, resetting the CWP set up is becoming very common. Having a $1500 labor budget, including casework, is more average today. And it can be more.

If you are looking at Atlanta area and want to work with a smaller sole proprietor type shop I like Beal at Checkpoint Auto.
https://ckptauto.com/ There's all the big name race shops in GA, but that's not the experience everyone is looking for. Sure, Goldcrest builds Leh Keen's rally cars, but you go to a race shop you get race shop pricing. Really a better option for a PCA E class club racer, etc.

Another shop in ‘Bama is Martin’s Classics in Huntsville. Contact Wayne Pacheco @ 256-801-7933. He’s done a good number of 915s over the past decades.

It that the same Wayne Pacheco that used to run "Pacheco's" on Governor's Drive? Near the old Stone Middle School? That used to sort of specialize in VWs? I had no idea Wayne was still around and working on cars!!

Yes, same Wayne. He's in his 70's now but still kickin'. I managed Martin's restoration shop for a short time. Wayne's been my mechanic for years and works for Martin. He can guide the techs through the process but it ain't gonna be cheap. Gary at YES Automotive on Washington St also does air cooled Porsches but he's covered up.
I ran across a couple small shops a few years ago that did nothing but 901, 915, and 925 rebuilds. If these guys are still in business that would really be worth checking out. I'll see if I can find info on them.

Mike Nail of Green Garage (southside) maintains my 3.2 carrera, and he has done work for me on older and newer Porsches over the years. He worked for Eurasian years ago. Mike is a fine fellow, direct, very knowledgeable and skilled IMO.

This guy credits Wayne’s recent work in the credits. Years ago, while he mostly took care of VWs, Wayne was also the only reliable full time 356 & 911 mechanic around Hsv. Quite a craftsman-tuner... & character too. |
