I do freely admit that my car might be a cursed pile of @#$% ;)

Sure Sugerwood. Sure.

Will never shift like a Honda Civic. And that’s ok. It is a 915.

Looks like an attempt at double clutching, but ends up rev matching, or not clearly demonstrated.
Still the best YouTube video on how to do it correctly. I guess it takes a babe to demo it correctly, <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NSup4MLX2GU" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> Sherwood |

Same guys say their 911 does not use a drop of oil!!!!

My car shifts just like the one in the video... right up until I decide to really jump on it then... not so much. Show me a fast 1/2 shift at about 6000 rpm's then ya got something.
|
Same here, sometimes slight resistance going in to second, other times smooth.
Did notice more smooth shifts during spirited drives. |
I had to revisit this thread after doing a video in preparation of removing my transmission. Here's my car under higher rpm shifting. It's good but the one I'm going to be putting in with 1/2 being refreshed will be better. I didn't include downshifts in this but 2-1 is brutal and 3-2 can get a bit sketchy from time to time. Going up through the gears is pretty good though. I could have matted it but feathered into 1 so I didn't jar the cameraman too much. Thanks to my son for a steady hand!

Second gear is "tricky" in my 915 as well. It's the same for both up and downshifts and consistent across RPM.
The only time I'm particularly challenged by it, is downshifting into second on track. The extra effort requires takes more time, and will throw off my rev matching. My solution is more practice. |
Can’t say how thankfully I am for this post. As a new 915 owner, you think your crazy or your cars a mess, then you read here and it’s all normal. Second sticky some times, the “ 2 stage shift “ , I know exactly what you mean!! Keeping revs up and only using 1st from a stop.
I tried once ( muscle memory from a civic ) to jam it to 3rd. That was the worst sound I’ve made in a car. Will spend next year really learning this gearbox before I think it needs a rebuild. |
There's really no reason to downshift into first. Don't fight it.
My 915 is very easy to shift into first prior to coming to a stop. Under 5 mph on the street. |

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving,
I have a 1982 SC with a 915. The engine and and transmission have 95K miles on them and have not been rebuilt. I just replaced all the clutch/flywheel and all components and the linkage was adjusted. I have always run Swepco 201 - a little stiff when cold but fine as it warms up. I have had the car for 5 years and at the beginning I found the 915 to be a little different, but I discovered that if I was patient with it and did not try to force it or shift as fast as I would with a modern car it worked just fine, in fact I really have come to enjoy it. I have found that if I do not rush the first to second there are no issues at all, as far as going into first, my car goes in easier while still moving a little bit rather that at a dead stop, it will however slide into first at 10-12 MPH with out and grinding, just slides in. Anyway, just my thoughts. Dave |

Rahal rev-matches because it's the fastest way to downshift and not upset the car when re-engaging the clutch. He also has a racing budget which includes periodic maintenance and replacement of worn transmission parts (synchros). Most of us don't have that luxury, that is unless a rebuild every few years qualifies as periodic maintenance. Learn how to double clutch as the young lady demonstrated. I suggest practicing by starting from the neutral position while coasting at speed, then practice rev matching in neutral before downshifting. Do it right and the only sign you have downshifted will be the revs. It will soon become second nature. Your synchros will love it, your transmission will last a long time and you won't fear downshifting into first if the need arises. S |
Funny how 2nd gear can be tricky at times. You think it's all the way down in second, but you know intuitively that it really isn't all the way there and it's that last little "click" that finishes the gear change.
I find it strange that Porsche couldn't get it right until the G-50. Wait, is the G-50 perfect???? |
