I actually have one that shifts like a Honda. It's a '75 box that came in my '73 with a '69 2.0L. It was rebuilt at one time, has an art deco style stamp ABC on it. Shifts like butter. I have it in my '84 now since 5th on that has a terrible whine. Hopefully I'll have time in February to tear them both down. The '84 to fix the whine and refresh in general and the '75 to see why it shifts so beautifully. Truly a joy to drive.

Just adding I'm another with a slow 1-2. Time enough to go take a nap. Grab a cup of coffee. Watch a quarter of football and THEN...ready for second gear.

I had my "post" purchase inspection done at my local Porsche dealer a couple weeks ago. They were like, "Yep. Normal 915."

my box has been opened a few times. Most recently i fixed 5th and reverse slider/synchro band, etc. Didn't have to take it apart any further to fix my issues. Found the cage bearing had one needle missing. Its possible it was missing since the last time it came apart, who knows.

I get some grind upshifting to 2nd. Sometimes when downshifting to 2nd but not often. I can go into 1st up to about 15 mph though so I count my blessing for that everytime I drive it!

Just keep repeating to yourself ... 0-40 in 10 sec is simply part of the old school 915 charm.

Per a comment I think earlier in this thread...once the engine is warm...shifting with a higher RPM makes a significant difference. I was out today experimenting for a half-hour or so drive, and managed some completely smooth/quick 1-2 shifts at above 4K RPM. Very cool. Every time I drive the 915 I learn something.

Excellent. Have you tried partial lift off. It's where you lift your foot only 10mm (in English that means "not very much") off the gas. it seems to speed up gear shifts as you are back on the power very quickly.

There have been at least 2 videos posted in this thread that refute this mythology. If you have to wait, then your gearbox needs a fixin'. See the videos with your own eyes. Post #20 and #32.

FWIW, my 1/2 shift is what i consider painfully slow which is why I refreshed 1/2 on a spare 915 with good 3/4/5. I know that shift looked pretty quick but there was a definite hesitation. A hesitation that doesn't exist in my brother's refreshed 915. It's funny, he's used to driving these cars but grinds 1/2 in my car where I can normally finesse it even at high rpm shifts. I just got tired of having to finesse it.

In the video it does look like one is considerably higher than the other. Has to be the angle of the camera because they're actually the same.

Yeah...again still learning...I've noticed if you "spin-up" the tranny with a throttle tap, it really likes to shift. I friend of mine used to race late '70's and mid '80's 911's back in the day (just found this out) and he agrees with the higher-rev shifts on the 915's.
