Correct routing for the mechanical speedo cable 74 Targa

Struggling to locate information on the correct routing for the speedo cable on my 74 Targa. I did run a search on Google and on Pelican.

It recently snapped. The PO had it routed in the cabin up under the clutch pedal and into the dash from the inside. I searched threads and found some information but it was not clear. There is no AC on my 911, should the cable be routed from the tunnel into the smugglers box and then up to dash? My car does not have the hole picture below in the two images. Which I believe is designated for the cable? My condition is the middle photo. Early Mid year change? Targa nuance?

Also, if any has a technique for removing and tighting the 27mm nut on the gear box end of the cable I am all ears. How is this done when the the trans is installed in the car.
Support the gear box and remove the trans support? The new cable I have has to tongs on the nut, special tool?

If you don't have that boss and hole, your car must have been equipped with an electronic speedo. If you need to stick with a mech speedo, maybe drill a hole in the correct location?

Just trivia, that boss is where the SC vac for the brake booster is located.

Don't think they offered an electronic speedo in 74. My gearbox is 7/31 915.

Drill a hole and then route though smugglers box?

What is the large hole in the bottom smugglers box used for? AC piping?

Where should the cable exit the tunnel when it reaches the front right?

I briefly looked into putting a mechanical speedo in my SC and checked out an earlier car for routing. Cable went through the tunnel, out the side of the tunnel at the pedals, up the inside of the footwell, then through that hole I circled. Not in the smugglers box at all.

Sounds like your PO may have had it correct

Was hoping not to drill a hole, if any has a 74 Targa and they don't mind looking a the cable routing that would be great.

R/R the 27 mm cable nut on gear box techniques???

Thank you for the 74 images.
Beginning to think I was a little nuts.
Ideas on a clean solution?

Explored the depression in the location of the speedo boss, found only metal, thought someone may have filled it. Does any one have a interior photo of where the cable travels out of the tunnel and through the hole to the factory cable boss in the trunk that is not in my odd ball tub?

Lack of hole in speedo boss 74

Thanks Duane, great images. I also need the pedal board, where did you source your aluminum pedal board?

Looks as though there is a tube or conduit that houses the cable as it passes through the cockpit. Nothing found on my 911

Inspected the inside near pedals, believe I found the depression in the tub for the cable boss and found out that for what ever reason mine does not have this hole. May drill a small pilot hole to determine if this is indeed the location.

Any ideas on techniques to R/R the 27 mm cable nut the fastens to the gearbox while the tranaxel is installed?

Going to drill my own speedo boss hole today, have a new cable, would be nice to have a functional speedo.

1” hole drilled
Mc giver 1” heater hose for a grommet.
Now just have to deal with the cable nut on the transaxle.
