Power Mirror Selector Switch L/R

No matter what position this switch is in, it will only control the drivers side mirror. Naturally I assumed the switch was bad - wrong. There are 3 wires a Blk/yellow, blue and a green so I am thinking maybe the wires were crossed by the previous owner?

Bentley manual diagram is incorrect. Also found a wiring diagram for 1984-85 but that one doesn't match either.

From the 82 Workshop manual (bad scan quality - but it is the best I have).
Current paths 1-5 are for the mirror. I actually see only one electrified mirror on this ?

My 85 Carrera has both sides with electric control :

I assume you are talking about the rocker switch under the tach that chooses L or R? that should have 3 wires as you state. I recently fixed all my door mirror wiring while i had my door panels off, so here are the basics on how the system works. the door switch has power and ground, and depending on position alternately sends +12 or grounds the two wires going to the motor and if selecting up/down it sends power to the solenoid in the mirror gear box to shift the mechanical to drive the mirror up/down instead of L/R. the solenoid in the mirrors will always work simultaneously regardless of which mirror you are trying to move, however the switch under the dash will interrupt the motor circuit on one mirror and completer the circuit on the other to cause that mirror to actually move. the green wire it the one fed from the switch so should be connected to the switch on the side that has only a single pin and full length copper trace across that side of the switch. The left and right mirror wires then connect to the remaining 2 pins (if you get these backwards just flip the switch over).

Here is a diagram with the changeover switch included.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1566997314.png

So my L/R rocker switch is wired correctly. I can hear the solenoid/motor click on the right mirror so probably an internal problem. From your description I am still a bit confused on why the left mirror always moves regardless if the rocker switch is L or R. Thanks for the schematic, couldn't find it anywhere.

the left shouldn't move when the right is selected. If there's a fault in the right mirror is should only cause the right not to work, but not cause the left to work in the right position.

Does the left mirror adjust correctly in both the up/down and left/right plane?

What happens if you disconnect the rocker switch? Does the left still adjust?

The drivers side mirror only adjusts up and down regardless where you move the door stalk. If I disconnect the L/R rocker switch the left mirror does not operate and I can hear a click from the right.

Is this a new situation or has it been this way since you got the car?

Ever since purchase.

I'm afraid you are going to have to open the drives door to figure out what the PO did in there, but you can start by removing the door panel top cap to access the mirror switch and see how it's connected, and just inboard the driver's door hinge in the trunk you will find a round plug that goes to the rocker switch and right mirror. you can use some jumper wires to supply or ground necessary pins to test the function of the right mirror.

Walt ..do yourself a favor..follow the index i have posted and you will find the problem;-)

Yes absolutely, that is why I suggested starting with the switch in the door and verify the right mirror function from the plug in the trunk.

76FJ55 : where can one get these clean diagrams for the correct years ? I have a diagram like that for the 911 MY88, close 'enough' for my 1985 but still there are some differences.
I also have the diagram from the workplace manual 1982 as shown above but they are in a 'current flow' layout.

Judging from your picture, there are these clean wiring diagrams for more than just the MY88 but where can we find those ?

76FJ55 08-29-2019 07:48 AM

mostly PDFs of the factory and Bentley manuals. The section i posted above was from the factory manual 85 diagram.

PM me you email address and I'll send you what I have.
