Tell me about this Bursch muffler

Came extra with a car I helped a friend buy. Owner said it was a Bursch. I don't see this model on the Bursch website. Look familiar? Is it a street muffler? Sport? And how does it mount? The tab in the middle with the hole, not sure I get what happens with that. Is there an additional bracket? Thanks.

It does look like an older Bursch 2 in 1 out, they have a really nice sound compared to stock or dansk. obviously it wont work with the heat exchangers shown in your pic. you would need an early style exhuast, SSI or headers.

Yep it's a muffler that needs the SSI-style layout (Bursch, Euro Racing Headers/GT Racing, SSI, etc.) to accept the muffler. The muffler is looks like one that is intended to be extra quiet and/or have a specific sound. Because it has two "glasspack" expansion chambers in each outlet and then it merges to a Walker/Dynomax plain steel muffler.

I don't want to sound like i'm crapping on Bursch. I think they do a nice job of providing a muffler at a fairly reasonable price when you consider other mufflers in this old Porsche 911 market are nearly $1000- which is nucking futs in my opinion.

However, the muffler mounts poorly. I've always gotten my Bursch stuff second-hand. So I don't know if Bursch includes any mounting straps or the like. But I know when I and a friend have each installed one of these mufflers, it doesn't hang very well. The muffler typically leans down to the driver/left side and the tailpipe is far too long as a result.

What I did is I cut away the metal brace from the outlet pipe and that allowed me to change the angle at which the muffler hangs. It also tucked the tailpipe more upward and inward. Then I used common exhaust pipe hangers from Summit Racing to hang the muffler from the engine on one side and from the car body on the other side. I used one hanger on one of the inlet pipes at place where the A/C bracket previously attached to the engine (passenger/right side of engine) and another hanger for the tailpipe at the left side bumper shock area.

Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the muffler fully installed. I have only a few pics of my "masterful" fabrication skills where I made a plate to re-brace the muffler against one of the inlet pipes. You can see in the picture that has the gray primer sprayed all over the place where I cut away the original brace to re-position the muffler

I think the cheapo Bursch/Dynomax muffler sounds great. Decent rumble at low rpms and it yells nicely at redline. Not too racy for street at all and most importantly no annoying drone or resonance at any RPM

A friend of mine used to have the Bursch on his 3.0L with SSIs and carbs. His was the race version of your muffler. It had one glasspack in place of the muffler and the inlet pipes were plain pipes. It was really loud driving around town (you could hear him coming from a long way away in the distance) and it really ripped at high rpms. Here he is on my favorite track Blackhawk Farms

I’ve always like the sound of the Bursch mufflers. I’m partial to the sound of the non-quiet model.

A friend of mine has that same Bursch on her 73.5 targa. It is a great sounding package. I've thought about getting one for my '72 MFI T. Probably lose some torque, though, as pretty much all non-stock mufflers do on MFI.

you might check with Brian, aka RarelyLate (sp?) - he is evolving off from Ben's M&K and IIRC he uses a real engine dyno on all their designs

Excellent Kevin! That's exactly the info I was looking for. I should add that I've made my own sport mufflers in the recent past, and have run SSI's on my own car for a few years now. The stock exhaust in the pics is actually for sale, it just happened to be in the pics with the Bursch. I just wasnt sure what to expect with the Bursch, your reply has made me curious. Great video too. I had a friend run at blackhawk just a few weeks ago. I would love to get my car on the track for some spirited driving like that.

Thanks Arne. Great info.

I have a Bursch on my 1973 RS and love it. Similar to this one, but with a bigger glasspack instead of the oval muffler.

Bursch has been bought by Sierra Madre Collection in Pasadena CA.

Horsepower engineering was the manufacturer. Doug Robinson is still around and an old friend of mine. You might call him at Horsepower engineering in Pasadena CA for information on the older Bursch models.
