Flag Style Mirror Disassembly
Has anyone ever taken apart a flag style mirror for a 76 - 86 911? I am in the process of prepping my car for paint and cannot figure out how the thing comes apart. I did a search and someone said there some sort of plastic ring behind the mirror that needed to be turned. When I move the mirror, all I see is a rubber boot covering the motor.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Dave |
Don't do this until comfirmed....I believe the mirror glass has to be gently pulled/pried off. There are 2(or is it 4?) metal nipples on the back of the glass that are inserted into the motor mount. After the glass is off you have access to all.
I'm going by memory and I haven't done this in about 6 years. |
The mirror is held in place by four clips to the motor frame. Using a thin putty knife/scraper slide it in behind the mirror to pry the mirror off. Be careful of the mirror heating element sandwiched between glass and the mirror glass.

Is the rubber ring surrounding the glass replaceable? My drivers side one is slightly warped and I would like to replace it

Hi osidak, The rubber trim on the mirrors is replaceable.. but, it's not seperate from the servo motors. so basically you have to replace the entire mechanism.. Not cheap either if you want new ..I'm sure you can find a used one.

I just did mine and there are 3 clips holding the mirror to the metal part with the rubber trim and servos, the mirror is not a seperate piece to the heating element that has 2-wires attached.
Once the mirror is out, there will be 3 screws holding the metal/rubber/servo part to the flag part of the mirror, unscrew those and seperate the electrical connector and it comes right out. |
You will also need a special tool to remove the wire from the connector You can make the tool yourself. I can't remember the dimensions of the tool. E-mail me if you can't figure it out.

I brought the tools from performance part. You need it to take the mirror off the car without resorting to cutting and splicing the wires.

Mirror removal from early style flag mirrors...be careful!
The tangs on the back of the early style mirrors are easy to break off! They have to be coaxed off a little at a time w/ the pressure at the base of the tang...don't press on the glass! The tangs are pressed into plastic lined holes...a fair amount of pressure holds them in...tangs break off!
I have a spare left side mirror setup I can sell spare parts from in case you need the tangs or the motor unit with a good rubber component attached. Rubber ring is attached to motor unit...
The rubber "ring" is attached to the motor unit...it is cast around it and is not separable. Sorry...if you need a new rubber trim for a mirror, the only way is to replace the motor unit too.
The motor units are available new for about $230 for the early style ('76 to '86) and $180 for the later style ('87 to '91). I can sell my good working early style motor unit with nice rubber trim for $60 + shp. Contact Joe in Santa jglsbca@juno.com |

From the looks of pkfrdh's picture it look like someone didn't buy the special tool to remove the wires from the connector. The blue crimps are a give away and the fact that the connector is not on any of the mirrors.
