like the idea, incorp what jazzbass said will make it great

pbs911 03-28-2003 07:27 AM

I think it is a great idea. Is there a way you can build in a computation as to HP and torque outputs by selecting different components. For example, by selecting a 3.2 crank, and 964 cams when rebuilding a 78 3.0 you end up with __ HP & ___ torque.

jluetjen 03-28-2003 07:34 AM

I like it. Be sure to have some way to print a report with the results. You've also most likely thought of it, but you might use it to directly populate a Pelican order if desired that could be edited prior to booking.

Great idea!

And dang, those are some quality photos that really help!

I think it is a great idea.

My only comment, fwiw, would be to consider configuring the wizard similiar to Dell computer's (on-line buying).

If a number of models (engine rebuild scenarios) where presented first and then the buyer was allowed to customize from a particular model it would help you manage the compatibility issues easier and would also give the buyer a target (hp / stock / custom / $$$$) right from the beginning. This would also allow you to get the site up and working fairly quickly and then build from a proven platform.... i.e more models / more options.

Hey what about integrating online dyno runs... just kidding (maybe not).

AWESOME IDEA! Great for newbies like me. GOD speed Sir Wayne!

Wayne,
This is great. It takes away the scare from the project size. Also agree with suggestions from Jazzbass. This is all good stuff.

Wayne 962 03-28-2003 10:56 AM

Wow, these are all good suggestions, but some of them would be *very* difficult to implement. I'm thinking of quickly making a 'basic' version that will look similar to what I have now, but will have a 10-step process:

1- Knowledge base
2- Tools
3- Materials
4- Bottom End
5-Gasket Sets
6-Pistons & Cyl
7-Heads
8-Cam Towers & Head Studs
9-Timing Chain

Etc, etc, etc...

The Dell model is very good, however, picking out a computer is a much simpler process than rebuilding your engine. A lot of people use some strange combinations. I will have the wizard check their configurations and offer them warnings if there is anything incompatible...

I think this concept presents it's self very well, If I had this to work with when I was doing my engine it would have been extremely helpful.
I don't know of anybody out there that provides this much reference material. Looks great Wayne.

Wayne, Just out of curiousity have you ever considered providing machining services? I understand it's a different business but you have quite the customer base ready to tap.

Wayne 962 03-28-2003 11:33 AM

I thought about out-sourcing machine-shop services, but it's really a lot of work, and it's beyond our scope. I'd rather work closely with another machine shop to give it more business...

It would be really nice to work with a machining business that had some type of relation to the board. Kind of understand the mind set of the crowd.

Wayne 962 03-28-2003 03:16 PM

People have yet to realize the marketing potential of this board. One day they will, and we will form strategic partnerships...

Bravo Wayne!!http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

Its a "build your own rebuild kit". You can custom tailor parts you need based on stock or performance rebuilds. I think the idea of the wizard raising red flags is a great idea..

this is a great thing.

boyt911sc 03-28-2003 04:22 PM

Very Encouraging.....

Wayne,
I may disagree in some of your ideas but this is SUPER. You really have become the Mesiah of 911 engine rebuilt. Your vision has helped and broaden the 911 followers. I am now one your new believers. Thanks for your devotion and interest.

Wayne,

That is *ALMOST* the coolest thing I've seen today. I like how you can delete and customize parts according to need. (remember me: the one who is doing a "bottom end" only rebuild on his '72T)

I say *ALMOST* because I got to meet Jack and Thom at Thunderhill today and see a couple of VERY nice (and fast) cars, BB2 included.
I even got a ride with Thom in his widebody cab 3.6. (thanks Thom, thanks Jack!).

I need to get on the track again!:D

Cool - I will provide updates throughout the weekend on the progress on this. Suggestions on the final product will be apprciated...

One thing: For those not yet having "The book", you may wish to add how to identify some parts where there may be some ambiguity...

For instance, for a '75 911 -7R, how do you tell which one it is (really hard for us directionally challenged...especially if the engine is in "backwards")?

1974-75 2.7-liter 911 - 7R Magnesium (right-side bearing tangs)
1975-77 2.7-liter 911 - 7R Magnesium (left-side bearing tangs)

Seems like Jazzbass is a web wiz. Maybe he can help Wayne in creating what he's talking about. Really like the running total idea, as well as the use existing part idea.

TurboBert 03-28-2003 09:42 PM

Wayne, this is a great idea. Go for it!
