g-50 cv joints

Question? Can the CV joints be "repacked" just by removing the
half shafts? I cleaned and repacked the inner CV joints on my
sick friends 915 after we reinstalled the engine and trans and
thought if its as easy as a 915 I might do mine next weekend.
My Bentleys doesn't show the r and r of g-50 half shafts. Anyone
have any tips on this minor service?

I did mine and was able to clean and repack both sides easily. The outers are a bit more difficult. I have pics somewhere I can post if you want.

Basically, I used lots of solvent and a toothbrush to clean out the grease, then dried thoroughly. The Pelican (Lobro) rebuild kits come with premeasured CV grease, just pack away and go. Lots of paper towels, nitrile gloves, and good music - easy project.

You can swap sides to spread the wear between the axles. You should check wear on the cages and balls on the inner CV's (they come out easily) and don't mix cages and balls from different joints.

The toughest part is removing the axle bolts. You will need a 3/4" drive tool and a 32mm socket with a 2"+ breaker bar. 340+ ft-lbs. Don't bother with 1/2" tools, you will bend them. If you can't borrow one, Harbor Freight has a cheap set for $45 that will do the trick.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Don

Yeah. What Don said!

I have done these as well. Don is right on with the recommendation of the 3/4 in. drive breaker bar (with a length of pipe on it) and socket.

You can try 1/2 in. drive, but i'll bet you $20 that you break any one of the socket, bar or extension. I broke three 1/2 in. drive extensions.
