do your parts come complete
I have to know. How many times do you guys & dolls order parts and the part shows up ok, but you still need the accompanying pieces that you were not aware of not coming with the part?. Wow does that make any cents? For instance if you order the headlight ring for an 82SC you might think it comes with the rubber gasket but no it does not. That was just an example this did not happen to me! If I order an air box for the same car I will only receive the air box correct, but I need all the gaskets and rubber goodies that go with it too. Now only a thought but maybe these items might want to be packaged in a KIT, and, also sold separately. A suggestion to the purchase of said items could then be made. This might be invaluable to the purchaser. Also $ales may increa$e, (Wayne). Now the weekend mechanic can do his job to completion. I know there is also a spot where the on line ordering form notifies you of other parts purchased by others with your item but they are almost never comparable to the item being purchased. Maybe it’s just me! Thanks for the thought. Speedy1

Porsche publishes a soft bound book for the 911 which has some exploded views of most but not all sub-assemblies with part numbers and some service advisories. The dealer network has of course the most thorough collection and directory for sub-assemblies with part numbers. You can also find old microfiche readers and Porsche microfiche parts manuals at swap meets which everyone that worked with these cars had before the proliferation of the PC. Good Luck!

I completely agree--I've had that happen several times. There should be the part, and then the part kit with new screws, gaskets, etc. Either that or a "suggested accessories" page that pops up after you add the part to your shopping cart and shows you what else you might need to actually install the part.
Heck, you could even go one step father and head off known issues before they cause a good customer to spend two hours on a nice Saturday trying to (hypothetically, of course) stretch muffler bands around a new muffler. ![]() I think the core problem is that every Porsche parts vendor is tied into the rigid supply chain. They all use Porsche part numbers, which is great if you're a mechanic with a parts manual in front of you, but less than helpful if you're in your garage and you forgot to order the dumb little rubber piece that you didn't even know was a separate number. |

Now were cookin with gas. These are the most honist answers I have gotten in a long time. With most venders selling threw the internet i feel they should post associated parts to do the job's completely, and let the customer decide weather or not to purchase the INSTALL KIT, or seperate doodads to compleet the job , screws, nuts, washers, gaskets, sealing compounds, ETC...

Hello,
I´m mad, because I ordered two sets of rims (18" Krone and 17" Cup2), one set of tyres, caps for both rims, two exhaust gaskets and some minor parts. Value some 3.200 euros. Order was placed on February 4th, prepayment was made, but the supplier gave me wrong account number. However I got almost all money back (bankcharges approx. 120 euros). I asked the shop twice if everything is ready to go and they answered yes, my shipment is ready. The second prepayment was made on February 25th and last thursday the trucking company had visited my home and on friday March 21th I received the shipment. It took some 10 phone calls and 20 e-mails before I got the tracking number for the complete shipment. Well, the set of tyres was not in the shipment and also missing one gasket. I also got one set of coloured caps, but I ordered black ones. I called the company and they told me that the tyres left a couple of days later, so was the shipment ready when prepayment was made, I think not. Anyway they told me that they would send me an email with tracking number for the tyres first thing. Have not received it yet. One rim was also damaged in transport, but this will be exchanged. So I just hope that I receive my tyres in the nearest future. Pls, note that this is company is in Europe. |

I'm one of the lucky ones, I guess.
My local parts man (an independent dealer, btw) really knows his stuff. I give him an order, and he can usually tell what I'm working on. If he sees some item I have missed, but will surely need, he tells me. A great partsman is a wonderful friend to the D-I-Y'er.

Amazing incompetence even with companies in Europe... That's the risk one takes when shopping via the internet or catalog. You are essentially buying on the trust of someone else and risking it all with a shipping company. If you were to go to a local shop or to the dealer at least you could see and hold the part, and if it were damaged, you would not be obligated to take it. I've had UPS damage several items that I have purchased over the years.

Everything goes wrong - expect it. If your butt is on the line, either order twice or pay twice for the fast shipping. Always look at the part if you're not going to the dealer (and even then sometimes you're not safe!)
My philosophy in practice -Down in Vegas on vacation, ordered a HVAC control for mom's Benz 10AM yesterday, insisted it being shipped overnight (see above !) - Waiting all day today, no box, 3pm I call - shipped today. And of course, no refunds for missed shipments. Funny part is - If shipped ground would've gotten here on time assuming no mistakes - but mistakes will be (and was) made so I ordered overnight shipping to give me some leeway - and it paid off. Don't even get me started on aftermarket fit and quality. rjp

I've had it happen to me, even though I try to order everything I can think of associated with my "project". I'd much rather spend a little extra for a "kit" or buy the recommended associated parts (even though I may not need them) than find myself without some necessary, ancillary item. BTW, Wayne (if you're reading this), this is just an extension of your "Engine Re-build Wizard" which is also a great idea. Jerry M '78 SC |

This is the "value added" you are paying for when you buy from a good parts vendor. For example, when you order an oil filter for your 911 they'll ask if you need the seals for the oil plugs. They'll also look up parts for you.
