911 Bolt Library

For some time now I've been cataloging both the size and application of hardware in longhood through impact bumper cars. In addition to application, I am also detailing the bolt manufacturer. My reasoning being you wouldn't want to use a KAMAX from an 85 car when a DERA was specified for 69.

Recently a member asked if I had 12 8x20 hex head bolts specific for the door hinges on his 73. Sorting out some of my newly plated hardware, I found 15 unique manufacturers of this size bolt and stopped when I found 12 really nice KARROs.

I could use some help in building this library. My spreadsheet columns include
Group (from PET)
Application (what it's used for)
Head (head, cheese hex, triple square)
Quantity
Size
Thread pitch
Total Length
Grip Length (smooth part of shank if it has one)
Stength
Nut
Washer 1
Washer 2
Special (any kind of special details like a beveled, notched tip)
Year
Manufacturer

If you have a known original car and don't mind posting details of your hardware through the normal course of doing work on your car, we would all benefit from it.

Manufacturers I have found so far:
Karro
Verbus
Kamax
Dera
Lobo
Graeka
Nedur
F+H
3F
Dorn
Arbed
Omel
Ribe

Various 8x20s hex head bolts used through the years

Do you know of a way to look up fastener specs by Porsche part number? In PET, the description is most often too vague to determine exact size/strength/other details.

This sounds like a great resource. Is the spreadsheet available for download somewhere?

Shaun I have taken my 70T apart and I'm hoping to get into the nuts and bolts this winter. All are in labeled baggies. What should I be looking for to identify manufactures and other info that would help. Maybe a quick nuts and bolts for dummies.

Hey Graham, not that I know of but I think I can cross reference spec books to add torque values in. That would be helpful.

Thanks, it isn't now, not mature enough, but it should be by the end of the year.

Hi PJ, wonderful! The head will have both the manufacturer name and the strength. Here's a pic of a VERBUS, KAMAX and a DERA. All three are M14s measured just below the head (caliper reads 13.91). One is 8.8 and the others 10.9. These are pretty much the most common, if only numbers that will be on a head. If you don't have a caliper but know the location, that's fine as I already have a lot filled in.

Would you mind posting a pic of two of some of your cleaner hardware? I'd like to see the plating finish. Will be great to have information from your 70!

Suggestion: Put the spreadsheet up online but as read-only (e.g. using Excel Online https://office.live.com/start/Excel.aspx?omkt=en-US) so people can benefit as you flush it out.

Or you can be extra adventurous and enable the community to edit/add...

what would REALLY be nice is a list of all the copper and alu washers for the 911 and the 930.

Thanks Shaun would be more than happy to pass on that info. I hope to be getting them down in about a month or so. Temps are starting to come down so that means being able to work in the garage. Still a little to hot.

Great thread. I see this becoming an important one for restorers.

Thanks Peter, most of my plating customers are restoration shops and all are happy about this library. I hope it serves the community well.

It’s been a few years on this. What’s the latest?
Also, how do you determine the size and type of a fastener or clamp based off the part number?
What I like about the Mercedes catalogs, is they list the fastener size and DIN number and for clamps they list the exact type/size,
Also, they use an addendum in the back that lists every type and size of DIN component in numerical order and where it is used. So for instance, if your wondering where all your 6x12 din 933, full thread hex head bolts, are used, the catalog will show every group and what page they are on. It’s great. The PET is annoying and I didn’t go to school for archeology. For instance, there is no rhyme or reason between the part number and the size of all the Norma clamps. As the band size goes up or down, the porsche part number bounces up or down randomly. No correlation
